Today’s song is from the film Ismat-1944 – a Muslim Social film made by Fazli brothers. This film was directed by the younger brother Sibtain Fazli, making his Debut as a Director. This was the second film of Fazli brothers to be made in Bombay, after the earlier film Fashion-43 also made in Bombay. Prior to that, they began their film making from Calcutta. This was to avoid the possible hindrance from the Muslim fundamentalists in Bombay, who were against making films depicting Muslim social life. Their first such film was Qaidi-40, made at Calcutta. It was followed by Masoom-41 and Chauranghee-42-all at Calcutta. Then they shifted to Bombay.

In Balochistan province of Pakistan, there is a well-known Hindu temple, Hinglaj Mata Temple locally known as Nani Ka Mandir. This temple is regarded as one of the 51 Shaktipeeths and is revered by Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims from Balochistan and Sindh especially the Zikri Balochs who are also the patrons of the temple. “One good thing about music, when it hits you, you don’t feel pain”.

Thus spoke Bob Marley (1945-1981), the famous Jamaican singer and songwriter, about the power of music. From the most casual to the most formal, every activity, every endeavor of human existence is in one form or another, quite inextricably linked with music. Music pervades our lives and our beings. In many an instance, music appears quite unexpectedly in our lives.

Back in 1981, the Minister of Culture of France was a gentleman by the name Jack Lang. He appointed Maurice Fleuret as the Director of Music and Dance. One observation Maurice had about the cultural ethos of France – “the music everywhere, the concert nowhere”. He conducted a sample survey of the French population. The survey brought out some very interesting results; the most important one was which established that almost half the population was adept at playing one or another type of musical instrument.

In Hindi film industry, there are very few producer-directors who make the films out of their passion for bringing to the notice of the public at large,  the social issues which they consider to be important. The mainstream film makers would generally avoid in their films such subjects as they are not money spinners at the box office unless they add ‘spices’ to those social issues to make it the box office success.  I had earlier discussed such producers/directors like Nagesh Kukunoor and Sai Paranjpye. I guess, the main driving point for them in making socially relevant films is the creative satisfaction and probably the international recognition they may get. Showmanship in terms of top star actors, music directors, lyricists, costly sets and costumes and the marketing blitz before the release of the films do not fit into their budget.

‘Lakshmi’ (2014) was one socially relevant film based on a true story of child trafficking and prostitution. How did Nagesh Kukunoor got the idea of making ‘Lakshmi’ (2014)?

Hullo Atuldom

In one of his recent posts our Avinash ji has suggested that there should be a category of posts – ‘Post inspired by fellow Atulite’ or ‘Post inspired by Atulite WA group chat’. I would like to borrow a phrase from Sudhir ji ‘thank you for the nudge’ and direct it towards Avinash ji. If not for Avinash ji I would have written this post a month later. Don’t know how I mixed up dates. And there have been posts wherein Atul ji has credited me with being good at remembering dates. It is not so Atul ji, calendars also need reminders.
