#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 168 # Missing Films of 1972 – 18#
——————————————

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Subah O Shaam’ (1972). This is one of the movies still missing on the blog. I became aware of this movie almost seven years back through HFGK when I got my first copy of HFGK i.e. HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980). I had then planned to present a Rafi song from this movie – “Meri Biwi Jahaan Se Niraali Hai”. I was actually looking for songs in the category ‘praising the wife/spouse song’; later on I dropped that idea (something for the good I think). Today I am presenting a duet song from this movie, which is sung by Asha Bhonsle and Kishore Kumar.

‘Subah O Shaam’ (1972) was directed by Chanakya for Shri Ganesh Prasad Movies, Madras. It included in its star-cast Waheeda Rehman, Sanjeev Kumar, Fardin, Loreta, Irin, Simin Gafri, Azar, Meeri, Kahanmoyi, Tajdudd, Tehrani, Rafi and others. This movie also had Rafiyee and Paiman as child artists. As mentioned in HFGK this movie was the ‘First Indo-Iranian Hindi Picture’, and that explains us the reason for the unfamiliar artists’ name in the star-cast of this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 25.08.1972.

This movie had six songs written by Anand Bakshi and composed to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Here is the list of songs in this movie as provided in HFGK.

Sl. No. Song Title Singer/s
01 Chhod Mera Haath Mujhe Peene De Lata Mangeshkar
02 Laa Laalalaa… Saaqi Ki Zaroorat Hai Naa Jaam Ki Lata Mangeshkar
03 Teri Meri Meri Teri Nazar Lad Gayi , Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar
04 Tadap Tadap Ke Bhi Aye Yaar Ham To Jee Lenge Lata Mangeshkar
05 Meri Biwi Jahaan Se Niraali Hai, … Mohd Rafi
06 Mere Laal, Mere Laal, Aaj Tera Janamdin Hai … Lata Mangeshkar

From the above table we can see that this movie had four solo songs by Lata Mangeshkar and one solo song by Mohd Rafi. There was only one duet and that was also the only song sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle in this movie. Today we listen to this duet song. Only audio of this song is available so it is not clear on whom this song is picturised. However I guess that it is picturised on Sanjeev Kumar and Waheeda Rehman. I would request knowledgeable readers who have watched this movie to throw more light on this movie and its songs, story etc.

Let us have a look on the list of movies of 1972 alphabetically after adding today’s movie which is the 125th film in the alphabetical list of films of 1972, as per Geet Kosh. For brevity the list given below includes the list of movies missing on the blog and list of all movies from the last post “Mathura Na Jaao Bhai Kaashi Na Jaao”  from movie ‘Shiv Bhakt Baabaa Baalaknaath’ to today’s movie song-post.

So far as I remember this movie didn’t perform well at the box office then and even forgotten also. But this movie had some good songs, or in fact, all songs in this movie are good songs to listen. Music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Though I had not watched this movie then in 1989-90. I am not sure if it was released at all in theatres. I do not remember correctly now. I watched some part of it online in 2018. However, one song from this movie “Yoon Lagne Lagi Aajkal Zindagaani” was in my memory since long. And later one of my friends who also liked this song refreshed its memory. So, when I came into the contact with this blog, I shared this song and later represented it with a post here. Subsequently I listened to all the songs in this movie and liked them very much as they have a nice poetry content in them. I have all of them ready and noted with men since long. Another song from this movie “Aaj Main Bechain Hoon” was posted on the blog on 09.01.2022.

As mentioned above lyrics for as many as six songs in this movie were written by Santosh Anand. Today 5th March, 2022 is the birth anniversary of Santosh Anand (born on 5th March, 1940, some sources have mentioned the year of his birth wrongly as 1929 or 1939?).

Santosh Anand has written some of the memorable songs in Hindi Films. And he went on to receive appreciation as well as awards. However, in personal life destiny has not been so kind with him as he lost his son and daughter in law, and later due to bad economic condition he has to suffer a lot. Old age ailments and his deteriorating health condition have made his life difficult further. And that is how it happens with many around us, but life goes on …

Today I present the third song from this movie, which is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and on screen Rakhee is lip-syncing and performing his song. We can also see Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini, Prem Chopra, and others in the picturization of this song. From the picturization of the song we can guess that Manoj Kumar and Rakhee are working at a construction site. The picturization is typical for a Manoj Kumar movie where the characters are going through lot of emotions.

When I had first shared this song to Atul ji, I had mentioned the following

THIS IS FOR THE RAKHEE fans, because I think even, they have forgotten this movie or the movie itself is a forgotten movie,

(Because on AVA ji’s post on Rakhi’s birthday – “Jab Tum Ho Mere Humsafar Khoobsurat” none of the commentors mentioned about this movie)

The song is a typical ‘Manoj Kumar’ type movie song. After ‘ROTI KAPADA Aur MAKAAN’ he tried to recreate that magic in every movie but failed. (and still luckily got ‘TWO’ women loving him in every movie),

Let us now listen to the song which is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal and the tune is a catchy one and the music is quite enjoyable and so are the lyrics by Santosh Anand.

Blog Day :

4720 Post No. : 16430

Welcome all to this post. We are discussing movies who made their debuts on the blog in its initial days and then they remain with ‘only one song posted’ on the blog for a long time or specifically more than ten years of gap.  Under this condition the today’s movie is ‘Sharaafat’ (1970)’.

This movie made its debut on the blog with its only known song (I think so) ‘Sharaafat Chhod Di Maine’ on 02.11.2008. So, today after a gap of 4614 days (including 20.06.2021) or twelve years, seven months, and nine days we are going to listen the second song from this movie.

‘Sharaafat’ was directed by Asit Sen for ‘Seven Arts Pictures, Bombay’. It had Ashok Kumar, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Soniya Sahni, Jagdeep, Abhi Bhattacharya, Kanhaiyalal, Sapru, Shabnam, Zebunnisa, Roopesh Kumar, Indrani Mukherji, Sundar, Niranjan Sharma, Poornima, Paro Devi, Jankidas, Brahm Bharadwaj, Chandrima Bhaduri, Kundan, Kesho Rana, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Tun Tun, Raj Kishore, Ajay Kashmiri, Prakash Mishra, Machhar, Dilip Dutt, Ratan Gaurang, Wajid Khan, Ravikant, Shefali, Bilkis, Jagdish Bhalla and many others.

This movie had six songs which are all female solo songs, five sung by Lata Mangeshkar and one solo by Asha Bhonsle. Lyrics for all songs of this movie are written by Anand Bakshi and music is composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Following is the list of songs of this movie.

S.No. Song Title Singer
01 Mera rastaa rok rahe hain ye parbat anjaane … Lata Mangeshkar
02 Duniya ne sun li hai chhupke apni prem kahaani … Lata Mangeshkar
03 Pehle naa dekha jaise kisi ne, aise mujhe aaj dekha Lata Mangeshkar
04 Jeewandaata jagat pitaa tum Lata Mangeshkar
05 Sharaafat chhod di maine Lata Mangeshkar
06 Main manaaun bhalaa kis tarah aapko Asha Bhonsle

I do not remember to have watched this movie but I was always aware of its most popular song ‘Sharaafat Chhod Di Maine’. And for today’s post when I was looking for the other songs from this movie, I thought I will listen all and then decide. I listen to the today’s song and found it somewhat familiar, so I am presenting this song today.

The song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and the gorgeous looking Hema Malini has lip synced it on screen. We can also see Dharmendra in his characteristic charming style of those years.

I hope you will also like this today’s song as I liked … it is something special 😊

Blog Day :

4702 Post No. : 16406 Movie Count :

The other day, Madhuri Dixit’s birthday was celebrated on the blog and it inevitably reminded me of many of her songs. This is one song from the film ‘Ram Lakhan’ (1989), which is never out of mind, though has been out of sight for many years now. This was in 1989, and my mother and elder sister were already fans of Anil Kapoor. I was not a fan and would call him some uncharitable names, not unprintable but will not mention here. The era of seeing every Amitabh Bachchan film was over, and Subhash Ghai, the producer director of this film was a big name. He was so big that he got to name a few of his heroines, rechristen them literally. Meenakshi, Madhuri and Manisha, Mahima etc. He was fixated or superstitious about naming the heroines beginning with the letter ‘M’. I have seen very few Anil Kapoor songs appearing in the blog. Some newer songs are here, but the many films he did in his earlier period, especially of his jodi with Jackie Shroff, are not here at all. Same is the case with Madhuri Dixit.

Film magazines like Stardust and Filmfare, were still the popular medium of reading and gaining knowledge, useful as well as not so useful. I can say for sure that it has been decades, since I have seen a film magazine in any language. Even doctor’s dispensaries don’t have them. I personally don’t know anyone who buys/reads any such magazines, or if they grace the center-table in any living rooms nowadays. Quite a fall for these publications really. Absence of television has helped, so that I am not even aware of the winners of Filmfare awards these days.

The song in question is a well composed, written and sung, sort of a filmy situation ‘bhakti’ song. Madhuri Dixit is the highlight, as only she could be. Laxmikant-Pyarelal have given a dekho, a ‘retro’ of ‘Pakeeza’ soundtrack and their own ‘Sargam’ soundtrack in the interlude music. The team of Anand Bakshi & L-P were a pro at creating such situational songs. And Lata Mangeshkar was still the backbone of any L-P score, be it the films of the South or Bombay.

What is happening here is the engagement party of Madhuri Dixit, sort of, with Amrish Puri’s son. Jackie Shroff is a police officer, playing the title role of Ram and Anil Kapoor is the younger brother Lakhan. Madhuri is forced to accept this alliance by her father Anupam Kher, with no help from Anil Kapoor, who is away on training as Police Inspector. So, when Madhuri is asked to perform in front of the guests, she starts the bhajan, remonstrating with the Almighty, and complaining to Ram present in the party, directly. Another highlight of the song is the way Jackie Shroff is seen to be preening (in his fine feathers) almost, as the addressee and the brother of Lakhan.

Anyway, when it is Lata Mangeshkar, who is crooning “Ho Ram ji ee eee”, and Madhuri Dixit is on screen, performing, who can stay unmoved.

Remembrance Day   —    Laxmikant Shantaram Kudalkar (of Laxmikant-Pyarelal)

Today is the 23rd remembrance day of Laxmikant S. Kudalkar one half of the music composer duo fondly known as L-P.  They were the sole torch bearers by 1988, of the melodious music of the golden era of HFM.   Though RD Burman was still around, but doing very few films.  L-P it seems never took a breather, till the demise of  Laxmikant on 25.05.1998.  I personally don’t know of any instance where Pyarelal composed a film score alone.

Laxmikant–Pyarelal received won 7 awards and 15 nominations for best music direction in the Filmfare awards.

Filmfare Award for Best Music Director– Won

1965 Dosti
1968 Milan
1970 Jeene Ki Raah
1978 Amar Akbar Anthony
1979 Satyam Shivam Sundaram
1980 Sargam
1981 Karz

They have composed close to 3000 songs out of which 896 are posted.  So the tally is so close to 900 mark.   Today is actually Remembrance Day of Sunil Dutt also.  I could have easily found a song by L-P featuring Sunil Dutt to post, but I was reminded of this wonderful group song from ‘Tezaab’ in a video forward in the family group.

Belgaum city has been put under strict lock down for the extended weekend from Friday to Monday.  The video is maybe shot last year showing empty streets, markets and by-lanes of the city.  It was moving very fast, so I failed to recognise much of the blurred views. This song from ‘Tezaab’ 1988 was playing in the background, so I decided to do this song post.  I have always liked the song for the humming in the background, and night journey in the battered vehicle with a broken wind shield.  Chunky Pandey and his friends are singing this song.  While sad looking Madhuri Dixit and Anil Kapoor are trying to enjoy their antics.  Second stanza is filmed on these two with background singing by Alka Yagnik and Shabbir Kumar.  Nitin Mukesh is giving playback to Chunky Pandey.

Peevesie’s Mom would have liked to post this as Chunky Pandey’s song, I suspect.  But I have it as a night song from ‘Tezaab’ by Nitin Mukesh.  That’s how I remembered it and had thought of including it in the ‘Chaandni Raatien’ series.  But since there is no moon visible here, nor it is mentioned in the song, so desisted.

The other day after reading Madhuri’s birthday post on 15th May, I remembered many songs.  Even started one post for a Madhuri song, but could not complete it.  That one is also a hit L-P score.  But for now, that song will have to wait.

For a five-minute song, this is having only 2 stanza’s.  So, I looked for audio version, thinking that it may have an extra stanza.  But there is no extra stanza in the audio version, which is slightly longer with repetition of mukhda.

So, let’s enjoy this hummable, slow, melodious, pensive, meaningful song, written by Javed Akhtar.

And remember Laxmikant Kudalkar, the musician.

Mukesh and his co-singers – 6
————————————————

Continuing with the series of the collaboration of Mukesh with his co-singers, I bring forth today his songs with Kishore Kumar. We started this series with Rafi saab and have covered only Talat saab as far as male co-singers are concerned. Kishore Kumar would have been an obvious next choice and in continuation I present this post.

Both singers began their career imitating the great KL Saigal. Mukesh sang the iconic song “Dil Jalta Hai To Jalne De” from ‘Pehli Nazar’ in 1945 but had begun his singing career in 1940 itself. Kishore Kumar began his singing career much later in 1948, with the song “Marne Ki Duayein Kyun Maangoon” under Kemchand Prakash .

While Mukesh with his failed forays in various departments, settled seriously for playback from 1958, Kishore Kumar tasted fair success in his many inroads of films other than playback. Mukesh and Kishore Kumar in spite of being contemporaries had quite different trajectories. As such it is difficult to write in tandem about the two singers.

They collaborated for a total of only 10 songs. That’s about one song in three years. For this reason, I was again under the impression that all songs of the duo must have been covered. However, two songs are yet to be posted and today I present one of them here.

I missed my table formation on Mukesh songs for these several months and am happy to reproduce below the collection of the songs wherein the two singers have sung together in duets, triads and chorus songs.

S.No Name of the Song Movie (Year of release) Other co-singers if any Music Director Lyricist
1 Lo mil gayi degree pyar ki Maalkin (1953) Ram Kamlani Roshan Rajendra Krishan
2 Zindagi hai kyaa Satyakaam (1969) Mahendra Kapoor Laxmikant Pyarelal Kaifi Azmi
3 Yeh kaisa aaya zamana Humjoli (1970) Mehmood Laxmikant Pyarelal Anand Bakshi
4 Tik tik tik tik Kal Aaj aur Kal (1971) Asha Bhonsle Shankar Jaikishan Neeraj
5 Haal chaal theek thaak Mere Apne (1971) Salil Chaudhary Gulzar
6 Tere hamsafar geet hain tere  Dharam Karam (1975) Asha Bhonsle RD Burman Majrooh Sultanpuri
7 Na ho bas mein tere kuch Dharam Karam (1975) Poornima RD Burman Majrooh Sultanpuri
8 Arre phenk do jam ko Kabeela (1976) Kalyanji Anandji Farooque Kaiser
9 Hum ko tumse ho gaya hai pyar Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) Rafi, Lata Laxmikant Pyarelal Anand Bakshi
10 Jaaneman jaane jaan Chor Mandali (1983) (UR) Dilraj Kaur Kalyanji Anandji GL Rawal

Going through the above list quickly,

  1. Literally a Kishore Kumar solo was off course hijacked by self to represent the last song of Roshan-Mukesh collaboration to be featured on the blog. It was an opportunity I would never have let go and will remain one of my favourite posts on the blog.
  2. Is what Atul ji rightly says in the post is a light-hearted yet philosophical song. Again, he is right in saying that it’s a rare occasion when the 3 renowned singers came together. Going though the list above, we can safely conclude that it is in fact the only occasion.
  3. Featured in this post will be elaborated below and is probably the only one of its kind in HFM.
  4. Was again represented by self to remember composer Jaikishan on his 44th death anniversary. Here Mukesh and Kishore Kumar are singing for an older and younger generation respectively. More on this later.
  5. Has as many as 30 comments in the post and I would like to reproduce a part of Sadananad ji’s interesting observation. I always felt that whenever Kishore Kumar had sung with one or more other male singers, it was his voice which predominated the song. This song is an exception. It is Mukesh who has dominated with his voice lock, stock and barrel.
  6. Has Atul ji writing a befitting post on the many contributions of Sudhir ji to the blog. Another important feature of the post is the introduction of his program telecast on DD on 27 August 2012 on the occasion of Mukesh’s 36th death anniversary. I request readers to read the post again and watch the telecast in which Sudhir ji was invited to share his views.
  7. Of course is the iconic “Ik Din Bik Jaayega Maati Ke Mol which people usually associate with the solo sung by Mukesh. However as rightly pointed out in the post by our Sadanand ji, there are no less than 4 versions of this song in the film and in this particular triad Mukesh is joined by Kishore Kumar and Poornima also known as Sushma Shrestha. This is the only film in which Mukesh and Kishore Kumar have come together for two songs.
  8. This one is yet to be showcased on the blog and will remain the last of the combo to be featured after this post.
  9. Needs no introduction and is a rare and only one of its kind in HFM but also a landmark song to be posted on the blog on the occasion of representation of 11, 111th song on the blog. Again, the efforts, tricks and circumstances that the bosses engaged to bring forth the celebrations is to be read again to be felt, understood, enjoyed and appreciated.
  10. Was presented by Arunkumar ji in his Lost and Found – Gems from unreleased films series. In this unreleased film which took inordinate time for filming, we have an elderly Raj Kapoor and Ashok Kumar cajoling Bindu in the picturization of the song. This was probably the last film that RK acted.

To write about today’s song – we have Mehmood singing/taking for himself in his own voice, we have Kishore Kumar singing for Mehmood and Mukesh again singing for Mehmood. Have I mixed up the actors? 🙂

No. Mehmood played a triple role in this film ‘Humjoli‘ (1970), playing the roles of three generations of a family. But I must correct myself. It is not three, but 4 – a quartet role, probably the only one of its kind in Hindi films. In the last scene of this film, a new born baby makes an appearance on screen, being the son of the third generation Mehmood. And the face of the baby, as shown in the scene – it is again Mehmood himself.

It will be interesting to know if there are any such songs in which different singers have sung for the same actor in the same song. I personally feel it’s quite a rarity.

This film had multi-lingual make, remake, dubbings etc. I suppose, our Dr. Pradeep will have a feast on the issue in the comments section. I leave the stage open for him.

It’s easy to notice in the featured song, Mehmood of the mid-generation enacting Raj Kapoor’s acting, dialogue delivery and even the looks. I suppose it’s from the film JDMGBH.

The other songs from this film are well known. However only 3 out of the 6 songs have been represented as on date and this post covers the fourth featuring the singers under discussion. In this song as well as song no 4 in the list above, Mukesh sings for a mid-generation whereas Kishore sings for the younger one. From these examples, it is sort of evident that film makers and composers preferred Kishore Kumar to sing for newcomers and younger actors. In many of the songs of the 70s, Mukesh was usually resigned to giving playback for boatman, title songs etc. Off course there were huge exceptions such as the film ‘Kabhie Kabhi’ (1976) and the songs sung for Manoj Kumar.

There are quite a few films in which both Mukesh and Kishore Kumar were playback singers though not necessarily singing a duet or a triad in the same song. One such film is off course ‘Kati Patang’ (1971) in which Kishore Kumar has 3 glorious solos. Surprisingly RD Burman roped in Mukesh for another solo playback on Rajesh Khanna. Mukesh very much stands his ground in this solo “Jis Gali Mein Tera Ghar Na Ho Baalmaa“. This song as we all are aware is filmed on the famous Nainital lake. I am discussing this particular song as I have always wondered under what category this song would feature.

I have seen the film and have some fair idea of the plot. However, in this particular song, the look on Asha Parekh is more blank so to say. Rajesh Khanna is more composed than in his other songs sung by Kishore Kumar. The lyrics are somewhat cryptic. And, then Mukesh singing in a rather unusual high pitch. All these aspects put together; I am sure there can be various interpretations as to which genre this song belongs.

Can we have inputs from more knowledgeable readers of more such films in which the two singers sang for the same actor under different circumstances.

Shri Harish Raghuwanshi ji of Surat has been kind enough to check the correctness and completeness of the songs in the table and I shall remain indebted to him for the invaluable help rendered.

So, to conclude the rare combination of Mukesh and Kishore Kumar has a total of 10 songs.

Hullo Atuldom

‘Amrit’ released on 27th June 1986. It was written, produced and directed by Mohan Kumar (01/06/1934- 10/11/2017) whose wife happened to be the sister-in-law of J Om Prakash, and actor Deepak Parashar happens to be his sister’s son. Mohan Kumar made films under his banner EmKay Films Pvt. Ltd. and began as writer-producer-director with ‘Aas Ka Panchhi’ (1961) which was a Filmyug Presentation.

‘Amrit’ has Smita Patil and Rajesh Khanna play senior citizens whose children ill-treat them after their respective spouses’ death. Amrit played by Rajesh Khanna has a son whose wife makes her father-in-law a male-nanny cum servant in-charge of buying essentials etc. Amrit loves his grandson very much and he in turn is hand-in-glove with the grandpa in eating chocolates and ice creams on the sly. Similarly, Kamla Devi played by Smita Patil has a son, daughter-in-law, daughter-in-law’s brother and a granddaughter for family where she is reduced to being a maid and nanny. Both the seniors come in contact with each other because of the grand kids who happen to be classmates and playmates. The seniors develop a rapport and look after each other when they fall sick and they have a group of sympathizers in the local doodhwala, dhabawala, and a jobless lawyer and his wife (Satish Shah, Birbal, Shafi Inamdar and Aruna Irani). This is unacceptable to their children who take that as an excuse to show the door to their parents. The elders re-locate and Amrit finds a job as a school bus conductor and Kamla devi takes to training ladies in tailoring etc. The grand kids come looking for the grandparents after they grow up and get married. Simple tear-jerker family drama movie.

Today on the occasion of Kaka’s (a.k.a. Rajesh Khanna) death anniversary, let us have a song from ‘Amrit’ which was one of his successful movies in the period after his reign as superstar. We have him minus his characteristic mannerisms in this movie. This movie was Kaka’s next association with Mohan Kumar after the successful ‘Avtaar’.

This song is a Karva Chauth song and Smita Patil is seen breaking her fast with Shashi Puri (guest appearance) playing her husband. Then we see Kaka going into flashback about his wife and their way of celebrating the festival. Zarina Wahab in a guest appearance plays the role of the wife. The song is written by Anand Bakshi to Laxmi-Pyare’s music. Anuradha Paudwal and Manhar Udhas are the playback.

I have seen this movie a few times and I am always amazed at the exact same red colour that both the ladies wear in this song and their accessories. Kamla Devi (Smita Patil) taking pains with accessories is understandable as she is in a better financial position as compared to Savitri (Zarina Wahab) who is the wife of a signalman at Rajpur station. By the time the song ends Savitri also joins in (she seems to have learnt it too). Another thing is both couple sing the same song. Kya baat hai!!!.  How?

Incidentally, Zarina Wahab who made her debut in 1974 in the Dev Anand produced and directed ‘Ishk Ishk Ishk’ celebrated her 61st birthday on 17th July. Here is wishing her belatedly, all happiness and health.

Thinking of Kaka today, on his 8th death anniversary.

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you don’t feel pain”.

Thus spoke Bob Marley (1945-1981), the famous Jamaican singer and songwriter, about the power of music. From the most casual to the most formal, every activity, every endeavor of human existence is in one form or another, quite inextricably linked with music. Music pervades our lives and our beings. In many an instance, music appears quite unexpectedly in our lives.

Back in 1981, the Minister of Culture of France was a gentleman by the name Jack Lang. He appointed Maurice Fleuret as the Director of Music and Dance. One observation Maurice had about the cultural ethos of France – “the music everywhere, the concert nowhere”. He conducted a sample survey of the French population. The survey brought out some very interesting results; the most important one was which established that almost half the population was adept at playing one or another type of musical instrument.

Armed with this result, Maurice dreamt of bringing this talent for music, out in the open. Working with his minister, Maurice set out to design a method which would allow common people to be able to perform for others. From this pursuit was born the concept of ‘Fête de la Musique’ or the ‘Festival of Music’. After preparing and communicating for many weeks, finally the date for this public festival was decided as 21st June. In the year 1982, this event was rolled out across the length and breadth of France.

Ever since, the phenomena has spread to practically everywhere. This festival is now held in more than a thousand cities across 170 countries.

One basic feature of this celebration is that it is free. The artists and musicians perform for free. And also, all performances are free for the viewing public.

When writing about music, I have occasionally fallen back on the 1985 film ‘Sur Sangam’, for a suitable song for the post. Once again today, as I write to celebrate this worldwide event, I bring to the readers another wonderful song that tells about the nature and practice of music. The beginning words of this song lay out such an adept definition,

saadh re mann sur ko saadh re
ek mann ko doosre se baandh re

Yes, a force that brings together and binds the minds and hearts of people. Need I say more – the experience of the regulars of this musical bandwagon will speak for itself.

As I noted in my write up for the song “Aaye Sur Ke Panchhi Aaye”, as far as the memory serves, the film ‘Sur Sangam’ is probably the last film that I can remember, that has music as its central theme. After 1985, I cannot recall any other Hindi film built on the theme of music.

The film is a Hindi remake of the iconic Telegu film ‘Shankarabharnam’. It has been produced by V Ramesh for Vijay Madhavi Pictures, Madras and is directed by K Vishwanath. The eminent star cast of this film includes Girish Karnad, Jayaprada, Sachin, Sadhna Singh, Deven Verma, Bharti Achrekar, Paintal, Tabassum, Asrani, Bhushan Tiwari, Dina Pathak, Mohan Choti, OP Singh, Jeet Mohan, Sulabha Deshpande, SP Dubey, Urmila, Master Akash Singh and Baby Mamta.

The film has a set of very wonderful 11 songs, all written by Vasant Dev, and set to wonderful classical melodies by Lakshmikant Pyaarelal. Five songs of this film are already showcased on our blog. And the sixth makes its appearance today on the occasion of the World Day of Music. The singing voice is that of Rajan Sajan Misra.

May there be delightful music today, and every day in our lives.

3998 Post No. : 15095

Yesterday (26th June) there was a discussion on the ‘Atulites Whatsapp group’ regarding songs containing the word ‘June’ in them. I thought that some of us would definitely point out this song – how can seventies’ fans miss this. So, our beloved Raja ji pointed out this song and reminding it that it was quite a popular song in those days. I must be 2/3 years old then, so I can’t say much about this 🙂 but, after listening this song now, I can say that it’s tune is quite nice and enjoyable and one can easily be humming this song after listening to it once.

I had come across this song few months back during my routine browsing, and since the starting of this month – ‘June’, I wanted to share the song during this month. I was thinking of sharing this song, but as the month progressed it was very hectic on work front for me and it slipped out of mind. But nevertheless, since yesterday’s discussion I thought we still have few days in this month of June and can enjoy this song.

The song is from the 1970 movie ‘Jawaab’ and it is picturised on the favourite comic side plot jodi of the seventies i.e. Mehmood and Aruna Irani. I was also wondering how our regular Mehmood fans have missed this song or maybe they have shared and waiting for its posting. By Mehmood fans I mean our respected Atul ji and Nalini ji. I apologize Atul ji, if he already had a post on this song in his mind. And if he has any, I would like that he present this song with his post here, because all his posts on Mehmood are very very nice and enjoyable.

The following other songs were noted during the discussion.

  • Hai ye June ka maheena – from the 1962 movie ‘Mud Mud Ke Naa Dekh’ – and this also is yet to be posted on the blog!!
  • The other song having the world June is ‘Mere Piyaa gaye Rangoon’

The movie ‘Jawaab’ was directed by Ramanna for RR Pictures, Madras’.  It had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Jeetendra, Leena Chandavarkar, Prem Chopra, Jyothi Lakshmi, Ulhas, Aruna Irani, Rajan Haksar, Leela Mishra, Prem Kumar, Madhumati, Kanhaiyya, Lakshmi, Pandey, Indra Acharya and Mehmood.

NS Bedi was the dialogue director for this movie. Editing of this movie was done by MS Money. Dialogues of this movie were written by Rajinder Krishan who also wrote the lyrics for all the six songs of this movie. Music for this movie was composed by Lakshmikant-Pyaarelal. Asha Bhonsle, Hemlata, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Rafi had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

From the re-certification date of the movie (available online) – 15.07.1980, it can be concluded that it was originally passed by Censor on 15.07.1970). Two songs from this movie have already been posted on the blog earlier.

This song is a fun love song picturised in a well and when Mehmood is there its entertaining and enjoyable given his own specialities. When I noted the lyrics from the video, the mukhda of this song goes like ‘aaja meri jaan ye hai june ka maheena, june ka maheena hai ye june ka maheena’. However, there is one audio version where the second line of the mukhda is different and having the words as ‘garmi hi garmi, paseena hi paseena’. Except this change in mukhda and “zulfon ki chhaon mein…” in place of “palkon ki chhaon mein bitthaa le o haseena”, rest of the lyrics are same in both versions. HFGK Vol – IV in its listing of this song also mentions the song title as “aaja meri jaan ye hai june ka maheena, garmi hi garmi, paseena hi paseena”, though I could not get to refer the appendices of this Vol IV of HFGK so I am not aware if any additional information about this is noted there. It seems that the first mukhda was overlaid later, in the movie version, before released. Possibly some objection by the censors. The change can be noticed in the lip movements of Mehmood.

Well, as Raja ji mentioned “though the Monsoon has started over and spreading its ‘wings’ across, some parts of the country still may be hot and humid”. So for those areas where monsoon has not yet reached, I think the words “garmi hi garmi, paseena hi paseena” and this song is still very applicable 🙂 .

Let us now enjoy this song…

Blog Day : 3737 Post No. : 14688

This song from the film Suhaag  (1979) has been waiting in my drafts for a long time now. It is a group song based on Punjabi folk and a popular one at that.

It so happened that when I saw Peevesie’s Mom’s post yesterday on Rekha’s birthday, got an idea in the mind to do a post for Amitabh & Rekhas birthday together with a song of both of them.  There are a lot of songs featuring these two as a couple yet to be posted in the blog.

Somehow I  thought of the song “Naam Re. . . Sabse Bada Tera Naam, O Sheronwaali” from Suhaag, as a trio celebration of Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s birthdays plus Navratri.  But when I looked up the movie in the list, this song is already posted by Peevesie’s Mom in 2016. So that choice got ruled out.

Further yesterday was blue day for Navratri, there was a photo session of all ladies in the office, which is the norm all over nowadays in Mumbai offices at least. A colleague made a collage of those photos and put it on the status of the office ladies whatsapp group. It so happened she had mistakenly included one group photograph from another office.

When I pointed it out to her, she said “galti se ho gaya re. . .” . I asked my husband if there was a song with the word ‘galti‘ , he said there was no such song but there is a song with the word ‘bhool‘,  e.g. “Hum Se Bhool Ho Gayee Hum Ka Maafi Dai Do” (‘Ram Balram’, 1980). I remembered the song “Hum Se Ka Bhool Hui Jo Ye Sazaa Hum Ko Mili” (‘Janta Hawaldar’, 1979). But since the song from ‘Ram Balram’ has both Rekha & Amitabh I shared the link to that song in the group. I am appreciated for thinking of a song at the drop of a hat, since we have a Hindi film song for all moments and occasions. I have reliable help in this endeavor, what with my husband being a filmy buff, YouTube etc. 🙂

So back to the song – today is yellow day and in this song at least Parveen Babi can be seen in full yellow, sunny splendour. And it has both Rafi  & Asha Singing for Amitabh & Rekha.  Asha Bhosle in giving playback to Parveen Babi too and Shailendra Singh is doing the honours for Shashi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist for this song composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. Amitabh Bachchan is in disguise in this song to hide his identity from friend Shashi Kapoor, which is uncovered at the end of the song by Shashi Kapoor. Overall a colourful and enjoyable song to suit a celebratory occasion.

This bhangra song is filmed in the old Blighty’s Hyde Park – London, if I am not mistaken.

ab tu inkaar na karna
chup kar ke ban ja dulha

ye ishq buri beemari
tu ne mera dil todaa..aa
mar jaaun maar kataari
chal chhod isey deewani..ee
mat kar barbaad jawaani
laakhon hain is ke jaise
laakhon mein ek tu raani

saun rabb di main mar jaawaan
o saun rabb di
o saun rabb di main mar jaawaan
ladaaayi thhi ye to jhoothi
o jhoothi..ee
pehen le pyaar ki ye angoothi..ee
ho..oo
teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne
o teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne

o teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne
o teri rabb ne banaa di jodi..ee
teri rabb ne
