‘Nikaah'(1982) was produced and directed by B R Chopra. The movie had stars Raj Babbar, Deepak Parashar, Salma Agha, Asrani, Iftekhar etc. Originally titled ‘Talaaq Talaaq Talaaq’ led to protests from Islamic clerics so the title was changed to ‘Nikaah’ This movie was Bollywood debut for Pakistani singer-actor Salma Agha whose grandfather Rafiq Ghaznavi was a well known music director of Hindi movies during 1940s.

Today’s song is from the film ‘Aazmaaish’ (1952). It was a ‘C’ grade action film made by Vinod Chitra. The producer HS Thorani was the director also. This was Thorani’s last film as a Director. Earlier to this film, he had directed 4 films, namely- ‘Stage Girl’ (1947), ‘Black Market’ (1947), ‘Taqdeerwale’ (1948) and ‘Achha ji’ (1950). During and after the World War II, such nondescript (meaning those who had no earlier Filmi background) producers and directors had cropped up. I strongly believe Thorani too was one of such people. The entry of black money into the film industry was due to such people only.

This Week, That Year – 8
———————————–
07Nov – 13Nov, 2011

OK yes, the tag line is correct, but the date is definitely out of sequence. Sincere apologies for this parallax effect. This is not the week of 7th Nov. This post should have come at least 6 weeks ago. And truly, the post template and lyrics and all the tag stuff was ready then, but the words to compose the post were trapped behind some real and imagined ‘constraints’.

Ah but you will say, why pitch in with the week of 7th Nov now, six weeks later. Well surely, for a special reason. That was a special week, with a very special milestone reached by the blog. On Saturday, the 13th November, 2011, we reached the 5000th post. That day, the blog had been in existence for 1,213 days – exactly 3 years, 3 months and 26 days. And we completed 5,000 posts, at a simple daily average of 4+ songs – day on day.

The magic of ’83 endures. . .

Some years before the ’83’ was planned and launched, ’83 already had made an appearance in another film that came in 2007. This film is not about ’83, but is about the inspiration that ’83 becomes for an orphan child who loves to play cricket.

The film is ‘Chain Kulii Ki Main Kulii’. Probably not a well known film, and probably many readers may not be aware of it. It did not appear on YouTube for a very long time. The clips that are available now were uploaded as recently as 2019. But in terms of financial stats, it is deemed to be a successful film.

I became aware that the movie ’83’ was releasing on 24 December 2021. I watched the trailer that was released on YouTube. Like most Indians, the trailer struck a chord with all normal Indians. Normal Indian means one who is interested in movies as well as cricket.

Like most normal Indians, I loved the trailer. What impressed me was the fact that Ranveer Singh, playing Kapil Dev, looked, acted, spoke and performed so much like Kapil Dev that it convinced the viewers that the movie makers had taken great pains in making the movie as authentic as possible.

Today’s song is from the film Harihar Bhakti-1956. This was a story from Vishnu Puran. It is also mentioned in Shiv Puran as a story on Banasur. of course the story was adapted to suit the film requirements. When such stories are used for films, naturally there is plenty of room for adaptation and imagination, because every detail is not mentioned in the original story.

Mohammed Rafi : The Incomparable (II) – Song No. 21
—————————————————

My favorite genre of Rafi song is not really a ‘bhajan’ per se but the the period often professed by me to find the most appealing of all periods is the 50’s. And for some time now, I have not posted a 50’s Rafi solo. A song again on a higher octave, this is a devotional song sung with chorus, in the movie ‘Aastik’ (1956). Music Director is Narayanan Dutt and it is written by SP Kalla.

Hullo Atuldom

The favourite singer of millions of Indian Mohammed Rafi was born on 24th December 1924. That means we, his fans, would have been celebrating his 97th birthday this year. But that was not to be. He just left this mortal world in July 1980 at the age of 55.
