It has been a while since my number of posts on the Atul’s Song A Day Blog have been sitting at a Dozen. The Thirteenth post has taken a while. The number 13 is it Unlucky. Let us see what is the reason for this.
The number 13 is considered unlucky in many cultures (especially in Western countries) for a combination of historical, religious, and cultural reasons that reinforced one another over centuries. Here are the main sources of the superstition:-

This is the title song of Ham dil de chuke sanam(1999), the second musical triumph of Sanjay Leela Bhansali. This movie and songs were a runaway hit. I have written as many as 4 posts out of 6 songs posted in the blog.

#the Decade of Sixties – 1961 – 1970 #

Today I am presenting a Qawwaalee song sung by Jaani Babu Qawwaal and Krishna Kalle. The movie is ‘Sakhi Lutera-1969’. This movie had made its debut on the blog on 22.05.2018 with its song ‘sochaa hai tumse pyaar karoon, kyaa khayaal hai’. This song was then presented by our respected Sudhir jee and here is what he had mentioned about the word ‘sakhi’ in the title of such movies and how movies with same titles were repeated in the history of Hindi Films.

Today’s song is from a Special Film – Raj Laxmi-1945.

The film was made in Calcutta by M.P. Productions. It was directed by Premendra Mitra and the music was by 2 MDs namely, Robin Chaterjee and Dhiren Mitra. Lyricist was Suresh Chaudhari. The cast of the film included Kanan Devi, Chhabi Biswas, Poornima, Jahar Ganguly, Iftekhar Ahmed, Puri, Talat Mahmood etc etc.

I called it A SPECIAL FILM, because it was Talat Mahmood’s first Hindi film in which he sang a Hindi song. Earlier he had sung a few NFS and a few Bangla songs in Calcutta. The film was made in Calcutta by M.P.Productions, so everyone connected to the film was from the Bangla cine world.

Film “Dil hai ke manta nahi”(1991) was another one of Mahesh Bhat movies, made like a “Chitrahaar”, with ten songs, including one double version song. From what I see in the trivia about this film, it is about adaptations galore. The story is adapted from American film “It happened one night”(1934), which is a tradition of sorts with hindi film right from early 50’s.

A few other Hindi films were also inspired by the same film – “Nadan” (1951), “Chori Chori” (1956), “Nau Do Gyarah” (1957), “Solva Saal”(1958) and “Basant” (1960). Similar plots were used in other Indian films as well – “Chaowa Pawa” (1959) in Bengali, “Chandhrodhayam”(1966) and “Kadhal Rojave” (2000) in Tamil, and “Hudugaata” (2007) in Kannada.

Today I present a ‘sensuous-seduction’ song by Asha Bhonsle sung for the movie ‘Gumraah-1976’. As mentioned earlier this movie seems to be an obscure movie of its time but it has now been made available on internet.

Our dear Satyajit jee has mentioned about the story of the movie in brief while presenting a song from this movie on the blog.

Here is this yet another rare song from Asha Bhosle. “Mohabbat Se Roshan Hai” is written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and composed by Madan Mohan. It is from the movie “Nawab Sirajuddaula” (1967).

Four songs from this album have already been posted on this blog. Here’s the fifth and final song. With this song, the movie joins the rank where all songs are covered or as we Atulites call it – Yippeed!!

“Nawab Sirajudaula” (1967) was a Lok Bharti Chitra Production. It was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The movie had Bharat Bhushan, Kalpana, Manhar Desai, Moti Sagar, Daisy Irani, B. M. Vyas, Naseem, Johnny Walker, Murad etc in it.

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 7

The revival of the series on A. R. Rehman is beginning with this post. The last post in the series was this song.

I apologise for my tardiness in leaving the series like this for 2.5 years. None but myself to be blamed for not taking the targets/tasks seriously. Maybe that is the reason none of my series appear in the list of series posted in the blog.

Koyi nai, I plough on doggedly. Not that it is a hard task to find ARR gems, sometimes forgotten in decades old fog. Take the songs of “Saathiya” for instance.
