Today’ song is from an eminently resounding flop film from a highly successful film banner. The film was Ram baan-1948. It was made by Prakash Pictures, Bombay, who were famous for their outstandingly popular films on Ramayana stories. The failure of this Ram katha based film was a terrible shock not only to the banner, but its owner and director Vijay Bhatt, reportedly, went into a depression for some time !

Film Rambaan-1948 had almost the same winning team of the earlier two Blockbusters – Bharat Milap-1942 and Ram Rajya-1943. The lead pair of Shobhana Samarth, Prem Adib, and umakant and the Music Director Shankar Rao Vyas were the same The director was also the same- Vijay Bhatt. Even the writers, Lyricists and singers were the same. Then what went wrong ?

Zulfon ke saaye
Rukh pe giraaye
Shaidaayi mere
Dil ko banaaye
Shabnam ke moti
Pal pal pirotaa hai
Kya karun haay
Kuchh kuchh hotaa hai

The above is the mukhda first written for this song Tum paas aaye yoon muskuraaye ), which is the only song which is so far posted in the blog of the film “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai(1998)”. The lyricist Sameer Anjaan wrote this mukhda first, which was rejected by Karan Johar and then he rewrote it as ‘tum paas aaye yoon mukuraaye” used for the song.

Without meaning to or searching for them, I have now seen lengthy interviews of two celebrities connected with this film. I even saw 15-minute-long climax scene of this film. So much help from youtube I never expected, but glad that it did.

We resume our journey of Kavi Pradeep songs after a gap of more than a month. I had planned to post Kavi Pradeep songs regularly because we have yet to cover many of the songs that he wrote for Hindi films.

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Basant Panchami-1956’. This movie has ten songs written by Kavi Pradeep. Chitragupt was the music director. Asha Bhonsle and Kavi Pradeep were the playback singers. Today we are going to listen to the sixth song from this movie.

‘Basant Panchami-1956’ was directed by Jayant Desai for ‘Hemlata Pictures’. Jayant Desai was also the producer of this movie and it was passed by Censor Board on 24.07.1956. ‘Basant Panchami-1956’ was a devotional or ‘bhakti pradhaan’ movie. Today’s song is from an imaginary (Kalpanik) film – Hatimtai ki Beti-1955.

The film was produced and directed by Nanubhai Vakil for his own banner Vakil productions, Bombay. Music was by A.R.Qureshi, assisted ably by the yesteryear’s composer, Damodar Sharma. Sharma was one of the well known Music Directors of the early era films. Among the old era MDs, Damodar Sharma was different, in the sense that his songs were always unlike those of his contemporaries. When you hear his songs, you will notice that difference. From 1934 to 1948, he gave music to just 41 films. All his films were C grade films made by Paramount, Liberty, Ramnik Productions, Mohan Pictures and others. After 1948, he stopped getting films, so he worked as assistant to MD A.R.Qureshi till 1964.

The cast of the film included Chitra, Mahipal, Daljit, Krishnakumari, Kamal, Kammo, Heera Sawant, Helen, Ruhi, Tun Tun, Naaz,Maruti, Sunder, Kesari, W.M.Khan and others. The guest artistes were Heeralal, Ram Singh, Al Nasir etc. Lyricists were Shevan Rizvi and Kaifi Azmi.
