During my four decades of sojourn with old Hindi films songs, I have come across many admirers of such songs among my friends, office colleagues and also within my family circle. There were categories of admirers in terms of period songs, fans of some singers, lyricists. music directors etc. There was one more category of admirers who outscored other categories in terms of numbers. Members of this group, while being admirers of popular old Hindi film songs of golden era, were by and large ignorant of other details of the songs especially names of music directors and lyricists. I also noted that out of these details, they were least interested in knowing the names of lyricists.

Here is a another duet, which is rare in the sense few people might have heard it. It is from a film called “Fariyaad” (1964). A few songs from this film are posted in the blog. This music of this film is composed by Snehal Bhatkar, and this song is written by Kedar Sharma. As I see in the list of songs moviewise three songs are already posted. So this is the fourth song to be posted. Another duet “Apne huzoor mujhe kya se kya banaa diyaa” was posted a few days ago (Post by Sadanand Kamathji).

“Upar Gagan Vishaal, Neeche Gehraa Pataal” – the unforgettable sound from the film ‘Mashaal’ (1950). The words carry a thrill – they have been written by Kavi Pradeep. The music is an uplifting exuberant melody – composed by SD Burman. And voice, the sound of which will make one sit up or even stand up – such is the strong conviction and the deep exhortation that one feels on listening to it – the singing voice is the deep, strong and bass-ful voice of Manna Dey. The song that set this young singer on the path to popularity and success.

Trawling, even for a few minutes, through the vast collection on the internet posted by so many lovers of Hindi music, the effort never goes unrewarded. And here is one delightful reward that I bumped into few days back, as I was looking for songs by Shailendra. A song that I heard long back, first time when I saw this film on Doordarshan, as a child, and then lost track in the interim. The film is ‘Insaan Jaag Utthaa’ from 1959. The film is a well known production from the banner of Shakti Films, Bombay, produced and directed by Shakti Samant. The main star cast of the film includes Madhubala, Sunil Dutt, Nazir Hussain, Minoo Mumtaz, Bipin Gupta, Nishi, Sunder, Krishnakant, Madanpuri, Manju, Praveen Paul, Shyam Kumar, Kesav Rana, SM Thakkar, TN Charlie and a host of character artists viz. Prem Anand, Sailen Bose, Kalpana, Mauji, Gautam, Kundan, Pacchi, Manju etc.

I have discussed as many as five songs from “Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen” (1963). They are all fantastic songs. And the interesting thing about these songs are, they are sung by different singers (more or less). Just imagine five outstanding songs in a movie sung by Rafi, Lata, Manna Dey, Mukesh ans Suman Kalyanpur !

I was looking for a song written by Shailendra for posting in the blog. That is easier said than done because a large number of Shailendra songs have already been discussed and the trick is to locate a song that has not yet been discussed. This search took me into unknown territory in YT. I came across a song on YT where no details whatsoever about the lyricist was available. The fact that it is from “Sanskaar”(1952) and it was composed by Roshan and sung by Lata was the only information available. Though a few comments were there going waah waah over this rare composition, there was no mention of even the lyrics of this song. So if one was to search for this song by its lyrics, one would draw a blank since the title simply says “Lataji Sanskaar 1952 Roshan” which is not very helpful.

In the 30s and 40s, female actor-singers like Noor Jehan, Khursheed, Rajkumari, Amirbai Karnataki and Zoharabai Ambalewali dominated the Hindi film industry. These artists were based in Lahore and Bombay (Mumbai). Kanandevi who was based in Calcutta(Kolkatta) held somewhat higher status of a superstar actor-singer for nearly two decades both in Bengali and Hindi film industries. Today, April 22nd is the birth anniversary of Kanandevi who was born in Howrah to a poor family. Her adoptive father died early which forced her to take the responsibility of looking after her family at a young age of 10 years. A well wisher introduced her to Jyoti Studios where she was given a small role in a Bengali silent film Joydeb(1926). Thereafter she worked in some more silent films. It took about 10 years for her to be noticed as an accomplished actor in the film Khooni Kaun (1936).

“Daku Bhupat” (1960) is an extremely obscure movie by now. The movie was a Jalaruha Production movie. Ramesh Gupta was the director and the movie had N T Rama Rao, Anjali Devi, Ramesh Kumar, Nandu, Majmudar etc in it. It appears that the movie was a remake of some hit Telugu movie, or perhaps dubbed version of the Telugu movie. Not just the actors of Telugu movie industry, even singers from South Indian movie industry were used in this movie. In other words, the songs were resung in Hindi by South Indian singers and used in the Hindi version.
