This Week, That Year – 2
———————————–
06Sep – 12Sep, 2010
————————————————-
Blog ten year challenge (2010-2020)- Song Number 77
————————————————–
If nothing else, then this week 10 years ago has to be characterized as the ‘Anmol Ghadi’ week. I am sure it was by design that every day of this week (actually six days of this week, barring the last day), the first song posted every morning is a song from the 1946 film ‘Anmol Ghadi’. This film has 12 songs listed in the Geet Kosh. As we entered this week ten years ago, five of these were already posted on the blog. That left seven. I am sure Atul ji took it upon himself to get the ‘Yippeee’ status for this film in a quick order, by posting one each of the remaining seven songs on each day of the week. And be done with it.

Some years back, I recall having seen for the first time on the internet the photo features of Hindi film stars such as Madhubala, Nalini Jaywant and Begum Para in ‘Life’ magazine. These photographs were taken by the magazine’s well known photographer, James Burke in 1951 who was posted in India. From the standard of 1951, these photographs would have ranked as bold. But one more actress also featured in that magazine – the featured photos were bolder than those of the stars I mentioned earlier. Subsequently, I had also seen her images appearing in ‘Filmindia’ magazines of 1948 and 1949. The actress in the photoshoot of 1951 was Mohana Cabral.

The date ten years ago, viz 1 september 2010 saw as many as seven songs getting discussed in the blog. First post of the aday appeared at 5:45 AM and the seventh post at 9:01 AM ! Ten years from that day, I am surprised myself how I was able to cover seven songs in a matter of little over three hours !
Here are the details of these songs :-
| Song | Movie title-Year | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Koi nahin mera iss duniyaa mein | Daag-1952 | All songs covered |
| Dil matwaalaa laakh sambhaalaa | Bewafaa-1952 | 05 songs posted |
| Chupke chupke rukte rukte | Paying Guest-1957 | All songs covered |
| Dil todna kisi ka ye zindagi nahin hai | Pooja Ke Phool-1964 | All songs covered |

| Daanton taley dabaa kar honth | Doli-1969 | All songs covered |
| Tadap ye din raat ki | Amrapaali-1966 | All songs covered |
As many as six out of the seven movies that figured ten years ago, have already been YIPPEED by now. “Bewafa”(1952) is the only movie that still has a few songs left to be covered and that makes this movie the only movie eligible for “Blog Ten Year Challenge” for today (1 september 2020).

Today, August 18th 2020 is 86th Birth Day of the poet, lyricist, story, screen-play and dialogue writer, producer and director, Gulzar. His presence in Hindi film industries is an assurance that lovers of Hindi films and Hindi film songs would continue to get the opportunity to watch and listen to the meaningful films and songs. I regard Gulzar Saab as an extension of what Sahir Ludhianvi left in October 1980 – a legacy of poetry in Hindi film songs.
I have already covered a substantive information about the filmy career of Gulzar saab in my articles ae hairat-e-aashiqui jagaa mat on the occasion of his 85th birth day last year and in shaam se aankh mein nami si hai, abut 5 years back. Also, there is no dearth of information on Gulzar Saab on the internet, in the print media and his website. So, I would skip this part.

Hullo Atuldom
Today’s post is because of this song. This song reminded me how amused I used to be whenever I saw it.
Atulji has mentioned the starcast of “Tohfa”, the movie of which the above song is. He has mentioned that he felt the props comprising of saris was imaginative. If he had seen the movie he would have understood the reason for the ‘Sari’ prop. I am sure there will be some followers of the blog who have not seen the movie and definitely some followers would have seen. They will remember that in the scene preceding the song Jeetendra has gifted Jaya Prada a decent looking sari as he is appreciative of her way of taking care of his mother in his absence. She is in awe of him and when his mother asks her if she would like to be her daughter-in-law she fantasizes the song. Like I mentioned to my mother “ek saree mila toh itne saree khwaab mein aa gaye”; how typical!!!! (I had wanted to write all this in the comments that day, but reserved it for this post)

In Memory of Meena Kumari :
Mehjabeen Bano, who gained name, fame and huge popularity as Meena Kumari, was born on 1st August 1932. Child artist, tragedy queen, poet and singer, are the various attributes to her name. Had she lived to see this day, she would have been 88 today i.e. the two fat ladies of housie. Really, she was just 40 when she left this world, her temporary abode.
Honestly, I have not seen many of her movies. Some of the earlier movies like “Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam” and “Chiraag kahan aur roshni kahan” I have seen on TV longback. The unforgettable “Dil Apna aur preet praayi” and “Ghazal”, “Kaajal” , “Mere apne” and “Bahu Begum” also on TV. “Pakeeza” is the only film I have seen on the big screen and revisited in recent times. The songs of ‘Pakeeza” are embedded in mind from early childhood, even before I am conscious of listening to radio.

The job of writing on old films and music is not an easy one, as many people may be thinking. Normally, such information is not available at one place and even if it is, the same has to be cross verified by other documents or proofs of some kind. There are many books available on these topics, but just having a book and copying from it has its own dangers. The danger to your credibility is one and misleading information is another one. I am of the firm opinion that no book on these subjects is without any errors. Every book contains incomplete information – including my own book !
