Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 4
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

This post under this series is not in chronological order as far as my ongoing reminiscences about Rajesh Khanna movies are concerned. But this post fits in this series about Rajesh Khanna. This particular movie “Chakravyooh”(1978) was critically acclaimed for the performance of Rajesh Khanna as also for ‘its offbeat story line’ which was at variance with typical Rajesh Khanna-romantic movies that we were used to.

The first three songs in the movie “M S Dhoni- the untold story”(2016) were sports related songs and they all appear in the first half of the movie.

Dhoni’s gets selected into India A and then India team in the second part and his cricketing exploits as an international cricketer, after some initial disappointing performances, form the second half. At the same time, the second half of the movie deals with MSD’s love life. The songs in the second half of the movie are all romantic songs. He meets a girl, called Priyanka, who is not aware that MSD is an Indian cricketer. On realising that he is indeed an Indian cricketer but with no notable performances so far, she wishes him luck for the next match and predicts that he would have a great match. She does not know his name though. On asking his name, MSD replies that she would become aware of his match after the Vishakhapatnam match !

The first three songs in the movie (as well as the story) dealt primarily with cricket and the first three songs too dealt with cricket.

The think tank of the movie then may have decided that too much of sports was going to make things monotonous. Like in normal Hindi movies, romantic songs must be incorporated.

I have so far discussed two songs from the movie “M S Dhoni the untold story”(2016). The first song appeared after about 20 minutes into the movie while the second song appeared after the next 20 minutes. So it was like clockwork- one song after every 20 minutes.

I am not one who can sit through a Hindi movie for its full duration now a days. Moreover, I cannot even bear to watch most new movies. There are exceptions of course. For instance, I liked “Lage Raho Munna Bhai”, “PK”, etc. I in fact have discussed a few songs from these movies in the blog as well, where I mentioned that I liked these movies.
