Fabulous Foot Tappers – 1

The write up on this music director by AK ji (see here) opens with the lead in comment, that “. . . his music towers over his films”. I am whole heartedly in agreement with this comment. As he goes on to say that just “. . . one song of his – “Paas Baitho Tabiyat Bahal Jaayegi” (‘Punarmilan’, 1964) sung by Rafi Sb is enough to give him immortality.” And then one reviews the list of films with him as the music director – ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’ (1961), ‘Punar Milan’ (1964), ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ (1965), ‘Chale Hain Sasural’ (1966), ‘Suhsila’ (1966) aka ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ (1977), and then of course the iconic ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (1975) – the film that gave its run for the money, in a stiff competition to the big time grosser of the same year (viz. ‘Sholay’), and still continues to be on the list top grossing films of all time. About two decades of active work in the industry, with just sixteen films listed against his name. But then, as AK ji says, it is just one song that confers immortality on him.
Remembering music director C Arjun on the anniversary of his passing away today (30 April).

Amitabh – The Later Decades – 2
—————————————————–
I am sure everyone remembers Dr. Bhaskar Bannerji. A very young rookie doctor, who is very troubled with the state of health affairs in general. An introvert and reserved person, living a very sedate life. The story is ‘Anand’ and the actor behind the Babu Moshai character captured the attention and the imagination of the audiences and critics alike. He was new, and struggling and still to land a lead role for himself. That was 1970.

The second song to appear in this series is this wonderful lively ‘middle eastern’ type song (as mentioned in the article which is the basis of this series).

An important date today – 21st October. It is the birth date of two very dear performers who have held the center stage for sustained periods, enthralling many generations of filmgoers and music lovers – Shammi Kapoor and Helen. In their own spaces, both these artists ruled the silver screen through the decades of 1960s.

“Dekhi Teri Bambai” (1961) was an obscure (and I suspect badly delayed) movie. This Seetal Movies production was directed by Kailash Bhandari. This movie had Daljeet, Purnima, Sheikh, Radhika, Shammi etc in it.
