In the aftermath of Kargil War of 1999, some Hindi films have been made on this subject, mostly as war films like ‘LOC Kargil’ (2001) and ‘Lakshya’ (2004). In the recent period, ‘Gunjan Saxena’ – The Kargil Girl’ (2020) and ‘Shershaah’ (2021) were also made on the subject. I was not aware that ‘Dhoop’ (2003) was also related to Kargil War of 1999. When I watched the film, I became aware that this film was based on a true story of Captain Anuj Nayyar, MVC who laid down his life while capturing Point 4875 in the Tiger Hill sector in Kargil War. He was posthumously awarded Maha Veer Chakra and his family was granted franchise for operating a petrol pump.

‘Mr Yogi’ (1989), directed by Ketan Mehta was one of a few Doordarshan Serials which I had watched its all the 13 episodes when it was telecast. The very first episode set the tone of the serial to be a light comedy and satirical one. It is a story about an NRI from USA, (played by the late Mohan Gokhale) who has come to India to choose a bride for himself. In his quest, he meets 12 girls of 12 different zodiac signs which results in some comical situations. There were a couple of medleys of popular Hindi film songs of 1960s and 70s in this TV serial. In the end, he rejects all the 12 girls but gets hooked to an unknown girl (Subhangi Gokhale, who became Mohan Gokhale’s real wife). The serial was based on a Gujarati novel, ‘Kimball Ravenswood’, written by an American Gujarati, Madhu Rye (real name: Madhusudan Vallabhdas Thaker).

Today’s song is from the maiden film Hotel-1956. The film was made by Bright Light Productions, Bombay.
After the II World War, a lot of Black Money came into the film industry. People having this type of unaccounted money were on the look out for investing it clandestinely so that they could earn legitimate profit on it and a part of their money could become White. Many times it was also a way to show huge losses and escape from the Income tax levies. In addition, Film industry glamour was an added attraction. Moving and mixing with well known stars and the late night parties where wine and women were freely available were very alluring too. some of such financiers had an ambition to become Director or an actor and their ill gotten money was helpful to fulfil such desires. So, during the period of 1946 to the mid-50’s, one can find few ‘onetime’ directors and actors in the credits of films. In the Geet kosh, one will find the column of ‘producer’ blank in many such films, as remaining anonymous was an early escape from drawing attention.

In Hindi film industry, there are a large number of artists and technicians whose hard work contributes to the making of films. But a vast majority of them remain unknown to public at large. For example, if I want to know as to who played a particular musical instrument in prelude, interlude, or postlude music of a song which I liked, there is no way to know the names of the musicians in the film as they were not credited in the films’ credit rolls until the recent times.

The box office success of ‘Dam Laga Ke Haisha’ (2015), a low budget film made under the banner of Yash Raj Films with Maneesh Sharma and Sharat Katariya being the producer and writer-director respectively, paved the way for this combination to make another low budget film, ‘Sui Dhaaga’ (2018) for Yash Raj Films. The cast included Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma in lead roles supported by Raghubir Yadav, Yamini Das, Sawan Tank, Manukirti Pahwa, Namit Das etc. The film was majorly shot in Chanderi (Madhya Pradesh) and around Delhi. ‘Film Hi Film’ (1983), was produced by Shahab Ahmed and was directed by Hiren Nag. The film starred Pran in a role of a film producer with Seema Deo as his wife and Ramesh Deo as his Secretary. Rest of the cast consisted of Raj Kishor, Birbal, Mohan Choti, Pandit Iqbal, Mulchand, and the new faces, Furqan, Bipin, Sonia and Beena. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Kamaleshwar. It was a novel idea to incorporate scenes and songs from some of the incomplete/shelved films of 1950s, 60s and 70s into the story of the film.

In the hierarchy of Hindi film actors, apart from lead and supporting actors, there is one category of actors who falls between supporting actors and extras. One may call them ‘small role actors’. I found it difficult to identify many actors in this category especially when some of them would be uncredited in the films. One such actor is Ram Sethi whom I had seen in some films of 1970s and 80s. It is only when I joined this Blog in 2011, I came to know that Pyarelal of ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978) was Ram Sethi. I have also seen him with Amitabh Bachchan in some more films like ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Yaaraana’ (1981), ‘Kaalia’ (1981), ‘Namak Halaal’ (1982) and ‘Jaadugar’ (1989).
