THE VELVET MAGIC- TALAT DUETS….Song No. 2
———————————————–
Today’s song is a duet of Talat and Lata, from the film ‘Meharbani-50’. The film makes a debut on the Blog with this song.

The Music Director of this film was HAFIZ KHAN. Now, this name is a case of “Same Name Confusion” with many people. There were Two composers of the same name, active in the same time period. There was one Hafiz Khan singer, who was given the nick name of Mastana by his senior Meer Sahib. Hafiz Khan Mastana was essentially a singer. He sang in Hindi films from 1938 to 1959 in over 100 films singing about 200 songs, according to one source. He also gave music to 24 Hindi films, from 1940 to 1952. He also acted in 5 films.

The Music Director Hafiz Khan of today’s song, was a trained expert Sarangiya (Sarangi Player) from Lahore. His first film as a composer was Zeenat-1945. The other composers with him here were Meer Sahib and Rafiq Gaznavi. This film’s music became famous because of the First ever All female qawali “Aahen na bhari, shikwe na kiye” in it. Hafiz Khan had also composed 4 melodious songs in this film. He gave music to Zeenat-45, Humjoli-46, Meharbani-50, Lakeeren-54, Mera salaam-57 and his last film Shareef Daku-60.

With this song the film Dhongee (1976) makes its debut on this blog. I know only this song from this film and remember it from my childhood days, when it used to be played on the radio, on Vividh Bharati to be precise. The YT uploader has erroneously mentioned this movie as a release of 1979.

I have confused “Chambal Ki Raani”(1979) with “Chambal ki Kasam”(1979) for a very long time indeed. “Chambal Ki Kasam” (1979) was directed by Ram Maheshwari for M P D Productions, Bombay. It had Raj Kumar, Shatrughan Sinha, Mausami Chatterji, Farida Jalal, Ranjeet, Pradeep Kumar, Nirupa Roy, Paintal, Amjad Khan (Special appearance), Gopal Sahgal, R Tiwari, Usha KIran, Peace Kanwal, Jagdish Raj, Nazeer Hussain, Paro devi, Goofi, Maruti Rao, Uma Khosla, Raj Rani, Baby Shalu, Master Bhagwan, Usha (Gwalior), Pt Ganga Prasad (Gwalior), Gurcharan etc. This movie had lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi and music by Khayyam.

Aap Se Humko Bichhde Huye, Ek Zamaana Beet Gaya” – a classic from the 1969 film ‘Vishwaas’. Interesting story behind this song. Kalyanji Anandji had composed this song to be sung by Mukesh. On the day of the recording, for some reason, Mukesh could not be present. Kalyanji Anandji, for the sake of utilizing the recording session, decided to record the song anyway, in another voice. The song was supposed to be re-recorded when Mukesh would be available again for recording. Later, when re-recording was being discussed with Mukesh, he happened to listen to the song that was already recorded. So impressed was he with the voice and the rendering of this specific song, he insisted that the song be retained and included in the film as recorded. Thus was launched the singing career of a mechanical engineering graduate, who had come to Bombay initially, not to become a singer.

Wishing Manhar Udhas many happy returns of his birthday (13th May).
