In our day to day life we face some or the other discomforting and problematic situations, most of which get sorted out over time. The end of such situations is the beginning of happiness.

One of the discomforting situations which I have started facing in the post- retirement years is that I suddenly remember the tune of a song which I had heard quite often in my younger days on the radio but I am not able to recall the wordings or other details. I become restless until I find the song. It is by chance that I get to listen to the song on YT or on the Blog after months. And the pleasure I get in solving this kind of ‘puzzle’ is akin to attaining nirvana.

Entertaining Sales Pitch Songs – 7
—————————————————–

I remember such sellers from my travels in childhood.  It was a time when intercity travel of half a day or less would be a journey by bus, and a longer journey would be by train.  Both my maternal and paternal families are spread out over the Punjab and Himachal areas north of Delhi – Chandigarh, Simla, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Amritsar.  All these cities being less than a day’s journey, our travels were generally by the intercity state transport buses. Any other travels, like visiting other metropolitan cities which are all south of Delhi, would generally be by train.  During my school years, travel to visit family was quite a regular affair, once or twice a year during vacation breaks.  Other travels, to places like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras and Bangalore were less frequent.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 19
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

There is a film from 1969 – ‘Tumse Achhaa Kaun Hai”. This film has a classic song, Rafi Sb singing for Shammi Kapoor, that has not yet made it to this blog.  (Yes, I am surprised too 🙂 ).  The mukhdaa of the song is an animated yet a resigned expression of helplessness – so many ladies to be loved, whom should I love – “Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon, Kaise Pyaar Karoon”.  The situation is not too different, when I am trying to select a song for posting here.  Atul ji mentions a specific requirement, and as I sit down to choose a song according to that, I find myself in the same quandary – “Kis Ko Post Karoon, Kaise Post Karoon – Ye Bhi Hai, Wo Bhi Hai. . .”.

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM…..Song No. 2
—————————————–

Today’s song is from film Ratnavali-45. Not a very well known name. Even in those days,it was not a film known by many ! But it had very good songs. This was a costume film made by Amar Pictures.

Amar Pictures was owned by Chimanlal Desai- who had established Sagar movietone in 1930 along with Dr. Ambalal Patel. Both were actually in Distribution business, but they entered film production line with the help of Ardeshir Irani of Imperial Film Company. Dr. Patel left Sagar around 1936 to go back to his Distribution business again and Chimanlal left Sagar in 1939 to form National Studios, joining hands with RCA’s Yusuf Fazalbhoy.

Today, the 27th of April, is the death anniversary of Feroz Khan.

It feels like only the other day that Feroz passed away – the memory (and shock) of that day is still fresh in my mind. But, when I checked the year just now, I see it was in 2009. So it’s already 6 years since Feroz left us. How time flies!

As we all know, there are thousands of songs out there and they can all be classified in many different ways. Here on the blog, Atul himself has categorized songs into several categories, depending on mood (sad/happy), or content (birthday/Diwali), or style (qawwali/disco) or even musical instrument (guitar/harmonium). And many other ways.

Apart from all these, there is one category that we don’t have but I think all of us will agree could be a fun category. That is “songs that if I hadn’t heard in my childhood or seen the movie, I don’t think I would ever have heard in my life”. 🙂

In my school and college days, we were taught that our essays needed to be precise and to the point and that beating about the bush instead of coming to the point was not recommended.

Much to my surprise, I discovered that Hindi movie songs, especially romantic songs typically had lyrics that would beat about the bush and would rarely come to the point. Instead of stating “I love you” and be done with it, Hindi movie songs would refer to “Baadal”, “Aasmaan”, “Chaatak”, “Mor”, “jhoola”,”Chilman”, “dupatta” etc etc. As a conscientious student, I disapproved of such collosal waste of stationery. 🙂

I have heard this song before on the radio, but I did not have any clue to its details.  Today, browsing online, searching for something different, I bumped into this song.  As I read the initial details, and then started to do some more checking, I realized this song has a very interesting and significant antecedents that make for a very interesting discussion.
