Today’s song is from the film Ek Roz-1947.
How many readers will know that a record number of films were made in 1947 in Hindi till then ? 181 Films ! It took another almost 40 years to cross this number. In the year 1985, the number of films made was 185.
Why was it that in 1947 alone such a high number of Hindi films were made ? The answer is – Partition of India in 1947 and the subsequent migration of Muslim film artistes to the newly created nation on the basis of Religion – Pakistan. Partition of India was the biggest blow to India, which had remained One Nation for thousands of years, despite having many religions thriving in it. Anyway, that is not the topic here.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Sajni-1956. This song is of some significance. It is a song sung by a pair of Husband-wife. Of course this is not unique. Earlier also there were a few such songs by Husband-wife pairs. What is significant is that this was their last duet in a film. The pair was Sudhir Phadke and Lalita Deulkar Phadke. What’s more, with this song Lalita ended her film singing career also !

‘Maan Apmaan’ (1979) was produced and directed by N V Deshpande. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Sushma Shiromani, Usha Solanki, Gajanan Jagirdar, Dhumal. Mohan Choti, Ratnamala, Asit Sen, Jayshree T, Shammi, Vishwa Mehra, Neelam etc. As per IMDb, the film was in the making since 1968 with Sanjeev Kumar and Kanan Kaushal (who, at that time, were yet to get established as successful actors). The film got delayed and at one time it was almost shelved. It was only when Sanjeev Kumar became a star and Kanan Kaushal came into limelight with her box office hit film, ‘Jai Santoshi Mata’ (1975), the film was revived, reshot and released in August 1979. The film was dubbed in Gujarati also.

Today’s song is from the film Gustakhi Maaf-1969.
Titles of Hindi films generally confuse me, but mostly they disappoint me. A normal cinegoer expects that the title of the film indicates the type of film it is or gives a hint of the film’s story subject or atleast the type/genre of the film. But mostly the titles are misleading. Luckily the hoardings and the posters of the film are more revealing and attractive. They give a closer hint about the film. Here too, what is shown on the hoardings is not seen in the films many times. Why I am saying all this is, because today’s film’s story has absolutely nothing to do with its title, by any angle.

However, as I noticed from the last few years, there have been some subtle changes and a lot of films on National issues, National personalities and films highlighting people who mattered in the development of the country have been made and these have received massive support from the viewers, encouraging more such adventures. In due course it surely will reflect on the Indian film industry in the world’s eyes.

The sudden demise of Saigal in the early part of 1947 and the stir created by India’s Independence in the latter half of 1947 sent shock waves to the film industry. The exodus of Muslim artistes from India to the newly created nation Pakistan created a void in the industry. The Indian film industry had always been a dynamic one, because it was never tied to any particular style or system. As per need it had always moulded itself to newer environments and adapted to changes – be it style of acting or drama-classical type of songs. Due to its secular nature and readiness to assimilate newer styles and music, the Indian film industry continued to prosper.

Today’s song is a marching song from the film ‘Veer Babruwahan’ (1950).
Now, the name ‘Babruwahan’ is a strange name and I am sure most readers have never heard it, at least those who are below 60 years of age. I heard his story for the first time from my grandfather when I was about 8 years old. Being an odd name and sounding even funny, it remained in my memory. Later I found his story in the 14th parva – The Ashwamedha Parva of Mahabharat in the sub–parva 91-92.

Ameen Sayani (21 December 1932- 20 February 2024) recently left for the heavenly abode on 20 february 2024. It goes without saying that Ameen Sayani was easily one of the most important personalities in the field of HFM. ‘Bhairavi’ (1996) was produced by Mahesh Bhatt and Amit Khanna under the banner of Plus Films and it was directed by Arunaraje Patil. The cast included Ashwini Bhave and Sridhar in lead roles, supported by Manohar Singh, Anjana Mumtaz, Sulabha Deshpande, Dilip Raj, Umashri etc. It was a musical off-beat film which had a limited theatrical release as it was targeted at the niche audience. The film’s shooting was completed in 45 days and was majorly shot around Mysore.
