Film Muqaddar-1950 was a Bombay Talkies film in its last gasping years. Established on 22-6-1934 by the adventurous couple Himanshu Rai and Devika Rani. This public limited company was a highly respected organisation in the film industry. Himanshu Rai had a knack of employing very talented and loyal employees. He had employed a lot of Germans in his company, as he had seen how work oriented people they were, when he and Devika Rani studied and worked in Germany. Today (1 March 2025) is the 83rd birthday of Indrani Mukherjee (born on March 01, 1942). I have watched some of her 1960s’ films mostly having pious and graceful roles. She was born in Allahabad (now Prayagraj) in a Bengali Brahmin family. Her father was a doctor and her mother, a housewife. She did her early schooling in Allahabad and completed her high school studies in Kolkata. From her childhood, she was interested in Hindi films.

Today’s song is from the film Ladies Only-1939.

The year was 1939 and the British Government had declared war against Germany and Japan, as soon as the WW II began. All countries ruled by Britain were – willingly or unwillingly, drawn into the war efforts and its effects. The war began in the month of September and soon various restrictions came into operation – like rationing, blackouts, shortages etc. The film industry which was still under its development stage suffered. It also realised the importance of remaining united as one industry. However, all that came after 1 or 2 years. In 1939 there was not much effect seen on the film industry.

Today’s song is from the film Divorce-1938.

Change is everywhere. Individual persons, family, society, a nation and the entire world faces changes. The change does not come suddenly. It does give some indications. Those who decipher and understand its signals, they are prepared and do not get shocked. Those who do not understand, they suffer and are not prepared for the effects of change. Just because you are good at something, sometimes, which people appreciated, does not mean that if you do not adapt to the changes in peoples’ tastes, they will continue appreciation forever. Remember, when choices are available, the world tends to adopt changes.

Hullo Atuldom

A long time ago, sometime in my childhood, there used to be an ad that used to start with “a small & happy family”. The family is shown to be sitting and enjoying quality, family time when suddenly there is a problem in the form of a flickering TUBE-LIGHT. Basically it was an ad for some brand of TUBE-LIGHTS that we used to see in cinema halls. From that ad, I learnt that small things effect smooth functioning of families.

Mukesh and his Composers – 34

Do Badan (1966) song “Raha gardishon mein hardam” was first recorded in the voice of Mukesh for Ghunghat (1960), which belonged to the production house of Gemini Studios.
The producer S. S Vasan felt that the song was not aligning with the flow of the film and he recommended its exclusion.

Six years later, composer Ravi took permission from S. S Vasan and included the song in the film Do Badan, in the voice of Rafi. Of course, the said song as well as all others in Do Badan (1966) did become quite popular. But sadly, the unused Mukesh version is probably lost forever. According to some sources, composer Ravi was said to be in possession of the spool recording of this unused Mukesh song, but unfortunately, it was lost in the Mumbai floods of 2005. Thus, the only place where there is a remote possibility of this song being traced is Gemini Studios, the production house of Ghunghat (1960).
