Saga Of Sleepless Nights – 10
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

raat bhar muaa sone naa de. . .

This snippet line is from a song that has not made it on the blog as yet. The film is ‘Vidhaata’ from 1982. This snippet line is from the naughty song “Saat Saheliaan Khadi Khadi, Fariyaad Sunaayen Ghadi Ghadi” (YT link). The song is kind of an item song that is performed on screen by a bearded and plump Shammi Kapoor lip syncing the voice of Kishore Kumar, with a harmonium in front of him, as he leads a local get together into a sort of celebration song. I am sure most readers will be familiar with this song. The lyrics are kind of raunchy, penned by Anand Bakshi. The song tells of the plight of seven friends whose husbands are in different professions. Each ‘saheli‘ tells of her woes as to how her husband does not let her sleep all night.

Rewind back 33 years earlier, to 1949. Another song that tells a similar story – the lady has the same complain, that her companion did not let her sleep all night. That the entire night was spent tossing and turning, and the night passed in this uljhan only.

An obscure film ‘Ranee’ (1943), which was a bi-lingual film made by Calcutta’s Barua Productions.

The film was produced and directed by PC Barua for Barua Productions, Calcutta. The music was by Kamal Dasgupta. Barring a few big movies, the Hindi-Bangla bilingual films did not become as successful as their Bangla versions. I feel the reasons were mainly two. One was that the cast of such films consisted of most names, with which the Hindi audience was not familiar. The second point was the style of acting and the dialogue delivery of the Bangla actors was deemed strange in Hindi belt. The Hindi used in films made in Bengal was too pure to be of the liking of people who were used to Hindustani language. The audience preferred ‘pyar‘ or ‘muhabbat‘ to ‘prem‘, for example.

Tu Chhupi Hai Kahaan
Main Tadapta Yahaan. . .

The anguished voice of Diwakar, the poet, that begins as a whisper from a famished throat, rises up to the heavens, as the poet is so painfully trying to search for his creativity – his muse, his love of life, a fantasy woman whom he has woven into his writings.

Mohini, whom he meets often at many a turn of the passages of life, is the romance that is rooted in his imagination, the power of creativity that propels his pen to create music and songs which are not understood, not accepted by his family and dear ones.

‘Hamraaz’ (1968) was a movie that starred Raj Kumar, Sunil Dutt, Vimmi and Mumtaz in lead roles. It was produced by BR Chopra. It was a love story with a murder mystery added making the film very interesting, entertaining & suspenseful. There were remakes of it in the 1990s – ‘Imtihaan’ (1994) and ‘Aarzoo’ (1999).

Today’s song is a duet from the film Sajni-1956. This song is of some significance. It is a song sung by a pair of Husband-wife. Of course this is not unique. Earlier also there were a few such songs by Husband-wife pairs. What is significant is that this was their last duet in a film. The pair was Sudhir Phadke and Lalita Deulkar Phadke. What’s more, with this song Lalita ended her film singing career also !

‘Maan Apmaan’ (1979) was produced and directed by N V Deshpande. The cast included Sanjeev Kumar, Kanan Kaushal, Sushma Shiromani, Usha Solanki, Gajanan Jagirdar, Dhumal. Mohan Choti, Ratnamala, Asit Sen, Jayshree T, Shammi, Vishwa Mehra, Neelam etc. As per IMDb, the film was in the making since 1968 with Sanjeev Kumar and Kanan Kaushal (who, at that time, were yet to get established as successful actors). The film got delayed and at one time it was almost shelved. It was only when Sanjeev Kumar became a star and Kanan Kaushal came into limelight with her box office hit film, ‘Jai Santoshi Mata’ (1975), the film was revived, reshot and released in August 1979. The film was dubbed in Gujarati also.
