Rafi Sb – In The Seventies – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –
(1973 – Solo)
Seventies was the decade of change, from the very subtle to sweeping transformations. The stars of the sky since 1950s, started to age and lose their glow and popularity. A new crop of youngsters was taking their place. Fortunes were changing, and so was the face of Hindi film music. Through the 50s and 60s, if Johnny Walker was in a film, then it was almost certain he would have a song. ‘Anand’ (1971) changed that. Issabhai Suratwala, the middle aged theatre company owner, went through this poignant tale with a role that had no opportunities for a song. Then, the number of Shammi Kapoor starrers as a hero began to fade. By the time ‘Manoranjan’ (1974) was released, Shammi was now a ‘fat’ character actor. Although still retaining the twinkle, the smile and the crack of humor, the appearance of a bulky posture and a accentuating beard was really a far cry from ‘Yahoo’. And the most significant departure came when in 1971, ‘Jaane Anajaane’ was released. The solo “Jaane Anjaane Log Miley, Par Koi Milaa Na Apna” performed by Shammi on screen carried the playback voice of Kishore Kumar. I remember now, in the ‘Filmfare’ magazine, a photo was published of the recording, showing Kishore Kumar and Shammi Kapoor, with the caption – ‘Shammi with his new ghost voice’. At that time, I did not understand the meaning of these words, as I do now.

The big milestone that was eagerly awaited for weeks and months now, was finally reached yesterday. The combination of euphoria and disbelief and excitement and happiness continues to linger in the hearts and minds. As I check the blog, the messages of congratulations continue to pour in. The feeling of being on top of the world – ah well, let it stay for some time. It will take some time to wear off. But it is a great feeling.

I have never met Atul, he is not even my Facebook friend! But over the past few years I feel I have known him for a very long time. I know him as a very kind and gracious person who not only posted a few of my guest posts on his blog but was even very, very generous with his comments on my blog which has nothing to do with film songs. Maybe the reason for this is that we both grew up in middle class households in the same era, and that too within 130 km of each other (he in Ranchi and I in Jamshedpur, both small towns)

“Jawaani Deewaani” (1972) was a hit movie. Encouraged by its success, the same team, viz Ramesh Behl (producer) and Narendra Bedi(director) came up with another movie with a similar title, viz. “Dil Deewaana” (1974). The movie had the same lead pair, viz. Randhir Kapoor and Jaya Bhaduri. Other in the cast included Komal(aka Poonam Sinha), Aruna Irani, Mumtaz Begum, Ratnamala, Durga Khote, Satyen Kapoo, Manmohan, Tuntun, Kamal Kapoor, Paintal, Pinchoo Kapoor, Kader Khan, Sharat Saxena, Rajrani, Ranveer Raj etc in it.

So now our blog is 9788 songs old. And I am increasingly beginning to feel like Sachin Tendulkar. What do his stats say? It says that he has scored 100 hundreds in international cricket both One Days and test matches put together. Now when we (my daughter and me) started sending contributions to the blog our aim was to send 100 contributions between the two of us. Then she slowed down because of various reasons (academic commitments being the main reason.) but I was having some free time and whenever the writing bug bit me I would send one across to Atul. Next came those dates when it was the birthday or death anniversary of any of my favorites or birthday of any important person for the blog itself (read Arunkumarji, Atul and the blog itself). So there were days when I used to send mails to Atul daily and sometimes I am absent from the blog for weeks. But after I got the mail from Sudhirji I have taken it upon myself to be more active on the blog and I have now reached 90 contributions on the blog (33 as lyrics contributor.) So this is what I said about “feeling like Tendulkar”.
