Much has already been written about Kishore Kumar in the media and on this blog too. So I am not going to repeat the same today. But I would like to mention that Kishore Kumar will be discussed till HFM exists on this planet. Much will be written about him till the HFM exists on this planet. People of future generations will keep coming across his songs and his biography and his acting and musical skills and his writing skills and his directing skills and … we can go on adding about this multifaceted personality, and a simple yet sometimes eccentric human being. One needs to into depth into his life to understand Kishore Kumar fully. Today’s song is from the film Sipahiya-1949.

When India got independence in 1947 and the British Rule ended, the Indian public breathed a sigh of relief. Especially, the film industry felt like coming out of a prison. During British rule, there were so many restrictions, specially during the war period, on the filmmaking – like, you can’t show the British in bad light, you can’t speak about Independence openly, you can’t criticise Government policies etc etc. Even the wordings of songs and dialogues were under a sharp lens. The best example of this oppression was the song in the film ” Kismet”-1943, ‘Aaj Himalay ki choti se ‘ written by Kavi Pradeep. He had to go underground to avoid arrest for this song !

Hullo Atuldom

This post by Avinashji was a post full of his memories of his childhood & how he got into the habit of seeing films.

Similarly, any song or film from the 1970s, 80s & even 90s sends me down memory-lane. And if it is 11th of October – birthday of my all-time favourite actor who is called the BigB or the Shahenshah of Bollywood etc then a trip of nostalgia is natural.

Today’s song is from the film Ghayal-1951.

This social film was produced and directed by Ramchandra Thakur. The music was by Gyan Dutt. In this film, there were 11 songs-including a 2 part song-but unusually there were 7 Lyricists whose songs were sung by 6 different singers. While 5 singers were well known, the sixth name ” Bhola ” was unknown. For a long time no one knew who this Bhola was. Many people thought that Bhola was Bhola Shreshtha, the M.D., but it’s not true. This Bhola was Bulo C Rani,M.D. He joined the industry to be a singer. Khemchand Prakash gave him an opportunity to sing in the film Mehmaan-1942. Later, the same year,Gyan Dutt also gave him songs.Bulo C Rani sang 34 songs in 19 films – initially in his own name, and from 1944 onwards as ‘Bhola’, as he had become a Music Director himself by then, with the film Moorti-1944.

# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # (Memories of Binaca Geetmala)

Today’s song is from the ‘1975’ movie ‘Ponga Pandit’. I have not watched this movie yet, but I vaguely recall this name from my childhood days. I was aware of a couple of songs from this movie. Songs of this movie were played frequently on ‘loud-speakers’. This movie, I think was not a ‘successful movie’ in terms of collections.

Today’s song is from the film Aahuti-1950.

I have not seen this film and I could not get any details of this film like its story etc from any source, so I do not know what kind of ‘ sacrifice ‘(aahuti) this film was about. From some of the songs, this film Aahuti aka Anokhi qurbani seems to be a film about Independence struggle or on conditions soon after India’s independence. This also looks like having a love story in the background.

There are some actors who have normally been identified with what is known as ‘middle of the road’ films. The big names among them are Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Farooque Shaikh, Om Puri, Irfaan Khan, Deepti Naval, Paresh Rawal and Pankaj Kapoor. In the recent times, some more actors have joined this list which includes Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Raghubir Yadav, Pankaj Tripathi etc. One more name of the actor which I would like to include in this list is Sanjay Mishra who has come into prominence after 2013. I am a great admirer of Sanjay Mishra as an actor. I find him to be an ‘offbeat’ actor because his expressions, reactions, body movements and dialogue deliveries are unpredictable. As an actor, Sanjay Mishra gives a feel of a real character of one among us.
