Today’s song is from the film Mr. Sampath-1952.
The cast of the film was Motilal, Padmini, Vanaja, Kanhaiyalal, Agha, Badri Prasad, Sundari bai and many South Indian artistes. The music was by the pair- Balkrishna alias B.S.Kalla and E.Sankar Sastry. The film was produced by Gemini and directed by S.S.Vasan, owner of the banner. The film was based on the novel “Mr. Sampath- Printer of Malgudi” by the famous writer R.K.Narayan and a hit Tamil film ” Miss Malini”-1947. I have read the novel and also seen this film, after it was released on 25-12-1952 and again 2-3 times after few more years…the latest being in last month. There are many changes in the story. The novel’s Hero is very loveable, so is the film’s Hero but only as entertainment.

Today’s song is from the Stunt film Bhedi Bangla-1949.
The tradition of making stunt/action films is as old as the birth of Silent films. During the silent era, due to the lack of sound -dialogues or music – the visuals had all the importance. The effect of forceful dialogues had to be put in visuals, which is extremely difficult. Imagine the famous scene of film Deewar-1975 (mere paas ‘Maa’ hai) without the superb voice modulation of the dialogue. Would it give the same effect on the audience ? Certainly not !. So, the best way was to give visuals which are self explanatory. A man hitting a blow to another man does not require dialogue or superb histrionics !

Today’s song is a duet from the film Khoj-1953. A total of 3 films were made with the same title Khoj, in 1953, 1971 and 1989.
Long time back, I don’t exactly remember when, I had read in an English book on Psychology that as a rule, 7 people in this world are mirror images of each others – which means they look exactly like each others ! I could hardly believe it. The book further said that this does not include twins- because they naturally look alike mostly. This made their earlier statement more intriguing.

Today’s song is from a very old film-Bramhachari-1938.
When this film was released in 1938, it created a sensation, because the film’s debutante Heroine, Meenakshi Shirodkar had sung a song in a swimming pool donning only a one piece Swimsuit ! 85 years ago it was a very very daring and shameful act which would ‘spoil the young and the innocent’ children. The Traditional puritan society could not tolerate it. The film was made in Marathi and Hindi. When the Marathi version was released in Maharashtra, the ‘Sanatani’ section of the society of Poona protested by having an agitation in front of the theatre. Long articles criticizing this appeared in local papers and some people even threatened to go to the court, if these scenes were not removed from the film immediately. Conversely, these scenes also attracted huge crowds who enjoyed such scenes on the screen for the first time in a Marathi film !

Today’s song is from the film Nazaare-1949.
It was a film made in the Cine Factory of Ranjit Movietone. It was called a ‘Cine Factory’ because, on all the 8 shooting floors of its studio, continuous shootings went on. Not only their own films, but outside producers also took the floors on rent and made their films. All materials like cameras, helpers, editing and sound facilities, mini theatre and all that was required to make a film was available in Ranjit, including actors, actresses, Lyricists, Music Directors, Directors and what not !

Today’s song is from the film Paataal Bhairavi-1952.
The film was a dubbed version of the original Telugu film made in 1951. The film was a creation of Vijay Vauhini studios of Madras. It was produced by B.Nagi Reddy and Chakrapani (He is the same person who was the editor of various versions of ‘Chandamama’ magazines). This studio was situated in Vadapalani- a suburb of Madras city. In 1980, I had an opportunity to see this studio and meet Chakrapani in the ‘Chandamama’ office, through one of my friends in Madras.
