Today’s song is from an imaginary costume film ‘Son of Sindbad’ (1958).

Alibaba, Alladin and Sindbad were the popular characters during our school days. Not only books of their stories but also films made on them were the targets of all children in those days. It was a thrilling experience to get a book on one of these Heroes, as a gift on “Happy Birthday” ! I am not very sure if today’s young children read these stories. I doubt if they even know these names. These boys seem to favour Harry Potter stories, while the young girls are lost on reading Mills and Boon novels, I suppose ! The big fat book ‘Stories of Arabian Nights’ was the most sought after book (in spite of 5 copies) in our school library. Stories of Alibaba, Alladin, Sindbad the sailor, Hatimtai, Gul Bakavali etc enchanted us.

Today’s song is from a ‘social’ film called ‘Captain Kishore’ (1957).

I was wondering what was the basis of calling this film a ‘social’ film, because it was clearly a stunt/costume film having the usual King- Queen-Evil Vazir/Evil Senapati story. I have seen this film and also give its story for you today. The Wadia Movietone was famous for making action/stunt/costume films, since the early 30’s decade The owners of Wadia split in 1942 on the issue of whether to continue making the action/stunt films. The younger brother Homi Wadia was in favour of making stunt films, while the elder brother JBH Wadia wanted to make social films, because he was seeing impending sunset on stunt films in the near future, and hence wanted to make social films on priority to survive.

Today’s song is from a Costume drama film Naqab-1955.

This was yet another film weaving a beaten-track story of the King – Queen and the evil Vazir. Initially I was quite amused with such stories and was keen to see these films. Slowly and in due course as I expanded my world, I started getting weary of such set stories. The basic plot used to be the same, only the names of places and the characters and actors used to be different. I guess, even the filmmakers got tired with these stories. In reality, the generation which enjoyed such child pleasing stories was receding in the background with the growing age and the next generation was eager to broaden its visions with different Genres of films like Comedy, Real life adventure, Religion, Love stories, Musicals, Historicals and what not !

Today’s song is from the film Bhool-1948.

The film was made by V.Shantaram’s Rajkamal Kalamandir, Bombay. However Shantaram was not directly connected with it in any way officially. It was directed by one of his younger brothers V.Avadhoot, who was basically a Cinematographer. Even for this film he worked partly as a Cinematographer and during that time, it is said, V.Shantaram Ghost-Directed the film !

Today’s song is from a film with a funny title – Dhobi Doctor-1954.

I said the title was funny because during our childhood, I remember, a Bogus doctor or an RMP doctor was called ‘Dhobi Doctor’, because he would wash off the patient with his money without curing him ! But this film had nothing to do with that and it only indicated that a person from a Dhobi family was a Doctor.

Today’s song is from the maiden film Hotel-1956. The film was made by Bright Light Productions, Bombay.

After the II World War, a lot of Black Money came into the film industry. People having this type of unaccounted money were on the look out for investing it clandestinely so that they could earn legitimate profit on it and a part of their money could become White. Many times it was also a way to show huge losses and escape from the Income tax levies. In addition, Film industry glamour was an added attraction. Moving and mixing with well known stars and the late night parties where wine and women were freely available were very alluring too. some of such financiers had an ambition to become Director or an actor and their ill gotten money was helpful to fulfil such desires. So, during the period of 1946 to the mid-50’s, one can find few ‘onetime’ directors and actors in the credits of films. In the Geet kosh, one will find the column of ‘producer’ blank in many such films, as remaining anonymous was an early escape from drawing attention.

Today’s song is from the film Raaj Tilak-1958.

It was a Gemini Pictures’ film, produced and directed by its owner, the successful, enterprising businessman S.S.Vasan. The Music Director was C.Ramchandra. All the songs were by P.L.Santoshi. For C.Ramchandra, this was possibly the last big banner film from the South. As such, the year 1958 was the worst year in his life, both professionally and in personal life as well.

Today’s song is from an inspirational religious film Jagadguru Shankaracharya-1955.

In Mahabharat, there is a dialogue between Lord Shri Krishna and Arjun. The legend says that when Kauravas and Pandavas stood opposite each others for a war on Kurukshetra, Dhritrashtra, the blind father of Kauravas asked Sanjay- who had the divine power of seeing the war at Kurukshetra- to describe him the war happenings. Sanjay starts and in the course of his reporting, the entire Geeta too is narrated.
