Today’s song is from an early film of Geeta Roy, from a stunt film- Jeene Do-1948.

If the 50’s decade was that of Religious films, the 40’s decade was dominated by Action, Stunt and Costume films. As many as 28 such films were made in 1948 alone, which gives an average of more than 2 films every month, which is quite high. The reasons were many for such films being made in abundance. The audience for stunt/action films generally belonged to the lower middle class, poor, daily wage earners and labourers. They looked for fights, stunts, dances and cheap humour in these films.

Today’s song is a comedy song from the film Gazal-1945. It is ‘ sung ‘ by comedian N.M.Charlie.

Though the playback system started in India in 1935, it had not become popular immediately for various reasons. Most important reason was, due to the poor quality of stage type songs in films, not many records were made and sold. Additionally, there was an acute shortage of playback singers for the films. Slowly, over a period, the picture changed and by 1940, the playback system was firmly entrenched in films. This not only increased the number of songs recorded and the subsequent increase in their sales, but also newer playback singers were discovered and encouraged to sing for films.

Today’s song is a duet from the film Maaya Bazar aka Vatsala Haran-1949.

The Ramayan and The Mahabharat are the two epics that are known to almost every Hindu person in this world. Different stories from these epics have entertained all of us from our childhood. Do you know that Mahabharat is 4 times bigger than the Ramayan ? The number of characters in Mahabharat are 10 times more than one would find in Ramayan.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film ” Usha Haran’-1949.

Hindi films or for that matter Indian films are a mix of various Genres. They cater to almost every segment of Indian society. Some stories are more popular than others and some Genres give surprises. For example, one would feel that comedy films are very popular, but statistics says that Tragedy films too are equally supported by the audience. One glaring example is, the early tragedy films of Dilip kumar ( in which he invariably died at the end ) and Meena Kumari and Nimmi made them Grade 1 artistes ! On the contrary, none of the 3 comedy actors like master Bhagwan, Mehmood or even Kishore Kumar were ever called A class actors !!

Today’s song is from the film Patit Paawan-1953.

The meaning of Patit Paawan is “one who is purified after having fallen down with sin”. This was used as a Title for Lord Shri Ram because with the touch of his feet, Ahilya-Gautam Rishi’s wife, who had turned into a stone, came to life and human form. However, today’s film is not on the story of Ahilya uddhar. The story is different but the moral of the story is same.

Today’s song is from a film of the Golden Era-Sandesh-1952.

This film was made by Sandesh pictures and its producer’s name was also Sandesh Adhikari. Luckily, the director was not any Sandesh. It was Bal Gajbar, a director not known in Hindi cinema, but he was a celebrated director in Marathi films. he did only 3 films in Hindi as a director namely, Mere Laal-1948, Sandesh-1952 and Gokul ka Raja-1954….his last film in Hindi. It’s Marathi original was Gokulcha Raja ( गोकुळचा राजा ) made in 1950, which was also directed by Bal Gajbar only.
