Mukesh singing a light-hearted peppy number and none other than Bharat Bhusan dancing a few steps to the tune; the combination of such a scene is extremely rare in hindi cinema, knowing the songs that the singer has mainly sung and the roles the actor has played. There have been quite a few Ghulam Mohammed compositions posted on the blog in the last few days. Any additions of such great but under-rated composers is always a cause of pleasure. I say un-rated because apart from his most remembered Mirza Ghalib (1954) and a rather un-finished Pakeezah(1971), Ghulam Mohammed’s immense talent remains largely unappreciated. It’s another matter that he himself was also to be blamed for remaining behind the curtains of Naushad’s much celebrated successes. It’s no surprise that not much information is available on him. There are not even many photographs of the great composer. However I did find this blog with a very fair and detailed description of his life and works. The importance of his talent can be measured with this line from the same article about his Pakeezah compositions.

Remembering Ravindra Jain on his birth anniversary today 28th February. Last year on 9th October he passed away from multiple organ failure in a Mumbai hospital at the age of 71. So this will his first birth anniversary without his physical presence in this world.

It’s been a while since we had a song in this voice. A voice which momentarily transforms us to another world. A voice so gentle and sweet that we invariably pause, ponder and are awestruck by the rendering. The total numbers are in three digits only. The genres of songs are also very restricted. But whatever is available will be cherished forever since the class of singing was always uncompromising.

I happened to listen to this short song for the first time in today’s program on Radio Ceylon and instantly fell in love with it. It is from the film ‘Dhuaan’ (1953) under the music direction of Dhaniram. The first step in sending the post was obviously to check if it has been already posted. For this I usually open all the songs posted from the film and also read the comments herein.
