I had begun to lose track of Hindi movie music by 1980s. By that time, Bappi Lahiri with his chaalu brand of songs had displaced the usual kind of music and the golden era of Hindi movie music was all but over. In late 1960s, R D Burman kind of music marginalised the older generation of music directors. Here , in late 1970, we find Bappi Lahiri brand of music marginalising the likes of R D Burman !

Many of the songs I have posted on this blog so far have been songs of the 1970s. I will not be so presumptuous as to claim that these songs are any better than songs of another decade. Every decade has produced its memorable songs and many would consider the golden period of Hindi film music to have started already in the 1940s/50s.

My memories of Sharmilee (1971) are associated with my seeing this movie on my first-ever visit to Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1972. I have described some of my experiences of that visit on the post relating to the song “khilte hain gul yahaan”.

It is my gut feel (and I may be wrong here) that the early 70s saw more newcomers entering the Hindi film industry for significant roles (not necessarily hero/heroine) than any other period before this time.

May 5th 1978 was a most awaited day for an Amitabh Bachchan fan. That day his latest movie Trishul got released. Zanjeer, Deewar, Sholay, Adalat and Khoon Pasina had been released in the preceding years and had proved to be super-duper hits. Amitabh Bachchan’s distinctive “positioning” as the “angry young man” in the rather cluttered world of Bollywood heroes was firmly established. That the above-mentioned movies were interspersed with blockbusters like Kabhi Kabhie (romantic hero) and Amar Akbar Anthony (comedian) only helped to intensify the hero’s aura among his fans.
