I am familiar with a movie called “Sargam” that was released in 1979 and that had hit music by Laxmikant Pyarelal. But there was another movie by this name in 1950. It had hit music by C Ramchandra.

How did one jugde the popularity of a song in the olden days ? One way was to listen to the Binaca geetmala coundown show. Another was to find out what songs were being requested the most in “Aaphi ke geet” farmaishi programmes by the farmaish senders of Jhumri Tilaiyaa.

There are cases in which a few filmy bhajans/ prayers become so popular that they become regular bhajans with many people. There have been a few such songs like this from movies like “Guddi”, “Sant Gyaneshwar” etc. Here is one such popular song from a forgotten movie called “Ek Phool Chaar Kaante”.

Aaya aaya atariyaa pe koi chor

“Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971) was regarded as the ultimate “daaku” movie till Sholay came about in 1975. In fact, Sholay had drawn liberally from “Mera Gaon Mera Desh”. The name Gabbar Singh was modelled on Gajjar Singh (played by the dashing Vinod Khanna).The dacoits of “Mera Gaaon mera desh” in fact looked more believable. And just because “Sholay” happened does not mean that “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” should and could be wished away.

“Ladki”(1953) was a musical extravaganza. It was full of some breathtaking dances by Vyjyanti Mala and Anjali devi.
And the songs soung so wonderful to listen to.

“Naya Ghar” (1953) is a very obscure movie by now. I came to know about the existence of this movie while I was searching about the movies of an equally obscure actor.

“Aah” (1953), not to be confused with “Aag”( 1948) had some lovely songs composed by Shankar Jaikishan, which were equally nicely picturised.

“Aan Milo Sajna” (1970) was a musical blockbuster. It had so many wonderful songs that it was difficult to keep track of them. All these days I thought that I had posted most of these songs, but I just realised that I had posted very few songs from this movie.
