Nirupa Roy is known among movie watchers as the actress playing long suffering mother of Amitabh Bachchan in several movies of 1970s. But that is not how she began her career. She was a lead actress in hindi movies for much of 1950s and 1960s, before age caught up with her and she began playing those Maa roles.

This song can be put into several categories. This song narrowly misses from becoming a “movie opening song”. The song begins immediately after the credits disappear from the screen. Guru Dutt and Mala Sinha are just married and it is their suhaag raat. But Guru Dutt, instead of taking interest in his newly wedded bride, complains that he cannot get sleep because of her.

“Picnic” was a very popular word in India in 1960s and 1970s. People, who could afford it used to go to some far off places during weekend or holidays to relax. They would play some games there, have their meals their and then they would come back. This in short was what was a picnic.

One of the category of songs that are found quite commonly in Hindi movies is what I call “Chhaayaageet” songs. These are romantic songs where words like “chaand”, “raat etc. are used quite generously. The best time to listen to such songs are at late night when the world in asleep and one can see the moom in the sky in its full glory.

In case of most Hindi songs, lyrics of the song are written by the lyricist hired for this specific purpose. But there are occasions when the lyrics are already available and they are written by persons who lived much before Hindi movies came into existence.

Though I have discussed over three thousands songs in this blog already, there are still a large number of great songs that are yet to be discussed. The long list of readers’ farmaish gives us a good indication of just how many great songs are yet to be covered. There are so many great songs still to be discussed, but there is only so much time in a day, that one can devote to their discussion.
