Sajjad Hussain was a music director who could create amazing music but his ability to make enemies meant that he got very few opportunities to showcase his abilities as a music director. He composed only about one hundred songs in 14 movies. He was described by Anil Biswas as the only original music director in Hindi movies. Coming from Anil Biswas, it is very high praise indeed !

Reading the line of the lyrics “naazuk naazuk badan moraa” did not ring any bells for me, but when I listened to the song, then it rang began to ring quite loudly. I had listened to this song during my younger days, some four decades ago. And I was not aware of any details of this song. In fact I was nnot even aware of the lyrics of the song. I only had vague recollections of the catchy tune of this song.

People these days lament about the degradation in the quality of Hindi movie music today. And as example of exemplary music, the cite the eras of 1950s to 1970s. But I tell you, when I was growing up in that era,then I felt exactly the same way- that 1970s had seen a degradation in the quality of songs vis a vis songs of late 1960s.

This song from “Toofaan Aur Diyaa” (1956) was a very old farmaish. When I looked at the lyrics “Piyaa te kahaan”, I thought it was a typo. But when I listened to this song , I realised that the lyrics are in fact what I read.

In old hindi songs, women were often shown taking their gaagri( water vessel typically made of brass) to the panghat or the river and then fetch water, holding the gaagri against their waist, or on their head. Not content to carry the water silently, they would then break into a song.
