Likhne waale ne likh daale

I have posted a song from “Arpan” (1983) in this blog. This movie has some nice songs in it that are wonderful to listen to even today.

Many people, including me, may only be aware of “Sargam” (1979), which had some nice songs in them. But there was another movie of this name, viz “Sargam” (1950). This older movie was one of the biggest hit movies of its time and its songs were just amazing.

When I was young, I loved making records- no, not the kind of records that played on record players, but the kind which gave you gloating rights. For instance, there were people who would have the record of watching every movie on the first day, first show, and there were some people who would boast of watching the same movie 100 times.

When we think about actors, we have certain images for them in our minds. For instance, when we think of Nadira, we think about a no nonsense lady always wearing a disapproving frown on her face. And it is difficult for us to magine her singing song.

Main hoon ek khalaasi

Among the major contributors in the development of Bollywood mov ie music, C Ramchandra’s name will always figure very prominently. The kind of music that he came up with is simply mind boggling. On the one hand he composed songs based on classical music as well as Indian folk music, and on the other hand he also composed songs based on western music.

By the time we were in 1980s, the golden era of Bollywood movie music was behind us and in we were subjected to music without soul (namely Disco music) in this decade.

There were two movies called “Chhaila Babu” that I know of. And incidentally, both these movies, which were made in 1960s and 1970s respectively, had the same music directors, viz Laxmikant Pyarelal.

I have heard about the movie “Gaban” (1966), mainly because of the song “ehsaan mere dil pe tumhaaraa hai doston”, which has gone on to become an iconic song, though this song is almost a non event in the movie itself.

Kaanchi re Kaanchi re

The songs of “Hare Rama Hare Krishna” (1971) were big rage during their time. One song that was a huge hit with kids like me was this song “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re”. Overnight, people with Nepali features began to be called Kaanchaa (males) and Kaanchi (females) respectively. One of my acquaintence kid sang this song “Kaanchi re Kaanchi re” addressed to a Nepali girl,hoping to eve tease her, but the girl, instead of feeling offended, sang back “Kaanchaa re Kaanchaa re” to him. 😉
