Atul’s Song A Day- A choice collection of Hindi Film & Non-Film Songs

My regular readers may have noticed that I classify my songs based on the place where the song is picturised. Thus we have had car song, rail song, even elephant song, in this blog.

This particular song is a bathroom song by my definition because it is sung in a bathroom. Unlike most bathroom songs which are sung by amateur bathroom singers, this bathroom song is sung by no less a singer than Lata. What is more, this must be one of the sweetest and most melodious songs that Lata must have sung in her career. At least that is what I have always felt about this song.

There are different songs for different times and moods. When it is time for rains, it is time for love to blossom in Bollywood. That way, I have always felt that the Valentine day (and season) in Bollywood is not in the spring season, but in the rainy season.

This song is also known as “dhal gaya din THUK ho gayi shaam THUK jaane do THUK jaana hai THUK“.
The lyricist Anand Bakshi had not included the word THUK in the lyrics. This additional word is there in the song thanks to the picturisation, where the heroine Leena Chandawarkar plays badminton with Jeetendra and the sound THUK is generated as the wooden racket hits the shuttlecock.

“Kati Patang” was a movie based on a Gulshan Nanda novel of the same name. Gulshan Nanda incidentally was a very popular Hindi novelist. “Jheel ke us paar” was another of his novels that was made into another movie.

Shammi Kapoor, who started his career with a whimper in 1950s, began to create waves in 1960s, beginning with “kashmir Ki kali”, and ever since, all his subsequent movies saw him playing similar roles in movies with similar story lines.

One common thread in all these movies used to be lilting music, typically sung by Rafi with gusto.

It is one of the iconic songs in Bollywood history, one that I have listened to many a times since childhood. That was in 1970s, and now we are in 2008, and this song was from circa 1950s! has this song aged, or has it become less known after all these decades ? No chance. this song continues to be just a popular as any venerable 52 year old song can expect to be. And this song is in good sprightly health too, one that is unlikely to become forgotten with passage of time. It is a timeless classic, there is no doubt about that.

This movie “Rampur ka Laxman” is by and large forgotten by now. It had many newcomers in it, including Randhir Kapoor, Rekha, Shatrughan Sinha etc.

Movie may have been forgotten by now, but its songs are not. Though the songs were supposed to be timepass songs, many of them became popular not only during their time, but stayed popular with the passage of time as well. It speaks for the quality of these songs and their creators that we still like to listen to these songs.

There are many instances when songs from obscure movies went on to become evergreen. This song from a barely remembered movie called Shagoon (1964) is one such song. I have listened to this song and I liked it too, but I had no other information other than the fact that the male voice belonged to Rafi.

I am sure no one recalls this 1978 movie called “Tumhaari Kasam”. In fact I do not think this movie was ever released in the parts of the country where I was growing up in 1970s. But I recall having heard this song and liking it.

Now that I have rediscoverd this song, after all of 30 years- and with the video of the song to boot, I realise that this beautiful song was picturised surprisingly well.
