Today’s song is from the film ‘Daasi’ (1944).

The film was made by Pradhan Pictures, Lahore, and was directed by Hiren Bose. The music was by Pt. Amarnath Batish (to avoid ‘same name confusion‘ the other Music Director Pt. Amarnath Chawla, I am mentioning their surnames also). Funniest thing is Pradhan Pictures was owned by Sanjay Pradhan – a person from Orissa, Director hiren Bose was from Bengal and Pt. Amarnath, MD was from Punjab. They all came together in the most popular and beautiful city of those times ‘Lahore’, to make a film which became a hit, mostly because of its music.

This Friday when I was listening to the program ‘Shaam Sindoori’ on my return travel from office to home, I was awestruck when I listened to a song sung by Rafi Saab.

It was like I was listening to this song for the first time. I do not remember if I have listened to it earlier. This song was ‘ye shaam hai dhuaan dhuaan fizaa bahot udaas hai’. I immediately fell in love with this song. After all it had Rafi Saab’s voice and a very nice composition too.

Memories of visit to London in September 2021

This post has been a long time in arriving actually.  We went to UK not as tourist, but to see family, mainly the daughter of the family and the new grand-daughter.  We came back to Mumbai in October’21.  Lot of water has flown down the bridge since then and the grand daughter is growing by leaps and bounds since we were with her, by the grace of Almighty.

Today I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Sohni Mahiwal’ (1946). I had come across this song when I joined this blog as a lyrics contributor in 2012-2013.

The movie was directed by Ishwar Lal and Ravindra Jaikar for Jayant Desai Productions, Bombay. The story is based on the legend of Sohni Mahiwal. It had Ishwar Lal, Begam Para, Mubarak, Dixit, Rewashankar, Sayeed Ahmed, Gharpure, Bibibai, Shobha, Nafis Begam, Kesharbai and others.

Today’s song is from an early talkie film ‘Gramophone Singer’ (1938).

The film was made by Sagar Movietone. It was directed by Ramchandra Thakur and Virendra Desai (owner Chimanlal Desai’s son and the first husband of Nalini Jayawant). The 15 songs of the film were written by Zia Sarhadi – who rose to great heights in the Indian film industry, but was humiliated, suspected and ill-treated in Pakistan. His end in Spain too was pathetic. Music Director for this film was Anil Biswas. The cast of the film was Surendra, Bibbo, Prabha, Bhudo Advani, Kanhaiyalal, Sankatha Oprasad, Gulzar and many others.

Blog 10-Year Challenge (2012-2022) – Song No. 35

And Kavi Pradeep has written a couple of lines for people such as these. . .

kya log thhey wo deewaane
kya log thhey wo abhimaani

Lines that describe so aptly the young rebel lions of India – a group that came together to fight for unshackling the chains of the oppressive and cruel alien rule that had continued to serve its own ends, at the cost of the assets and riches of our nation.  A group that had members from all parts of the country, a group that was formed cutting across all the divisions and components of the society – Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azaad, Bhai Parmanand, Kartar Singh Sarabha, Batukeshwar Dutt, Ashfaaqullah, Shivaram Rajguru, Sukhdev, Ramprasad Bismil, Harnam Singh Saini, Bhagwati Charan Vohra, Durgawati Devi, Kishori Lal, Dharam Singh Hayatpur, Jatendranath Das, Sher Ali Afridi, Jai Dev Kapur, Shiv Verma, Kundan Lal, Mahabir Verma, Rajendra Lahiri, Thakur Roshan Singh, Sachindra Bakshi, Keshab Chakravarty, Banwari Lal, Murari Lal Gupta, Mukundi Lal, Manmathnath Gupta, Mohammed Abdullah, Gaya Prasad, Kanwal Nath Tiwari, Vijay Kumar Sinha, Prem Dutt, Des Raj, Ajay Kumar Ghosh. . . the list goes on and on in the pages of the history of the nation’s struggle for freedom.

One can easily get philosophical too, besides the celebratory aspect. So okay, one more year, one more Holi celebration, one more set of songs posted. . .  And the wheel of life continues to roll. . .

Into the fourteenth year of continuous daily publication, since July 2008. And we have gone past on the way, fourteen Holi celebrations. In the earlier post today, Peevesie’s Mom ji has written that we have 66 Holi songs already posted here. She refers to one of my earlier posts, in which I have written that the Hindi cinema has an intense liking for this festival. And that we still have quite a number of Holi celebration songs that are awaiting discovery out there, and also, waiting to take their place on this blog.

Welcome all to this post and wishing herewith all a ‘very happy and colourful Holi-2022’.

This is the fourteenth ‘holi’ celebration on this ‘musical’ blog and as is ‘customary’ for us we celebrate this by enjoying a song, for a change a ‘poetry’ recitation, in this post today.
