Today’s song is from film Taj Mahal (1941).
In the last few months, I have written articles on films of the early cinema i.e. from the decade of the 1930s. In these articles, I have introduced few unknown or less known heros and heroines of those times, to our readers. Some of these are Vijay Kumar, Ram Singh, Shankar Rao Vazare, Gul Hamid, Prakash and heroines like Menaka, Radha Rani, Meera Mishra, Meera Devi etc. Today also we will learn about yet another less known hero of the silent and early talkie films – Master Khalil Ahmed.

The film that we are bringing to the Yippeee-land today, has been waiting for the final song for the last almost three years. The 1970 film ‘Maa Ka Aanchal’ had made its debut on the blog on 10th May, 2012. Exactly three years later, on 10th May, 2015, the fifth song of this film was posted. As I look at these dates, I am tempted to defer this posting to 10th May, just to complete a sequence. But then I thought better of it. 🙂

Today’s song is from film ‘Adhoori Kahani’ (1939).
This film is made by Ranjit Movietone of Sardar Chandulal Shah. A lot has already been written about him, Gauhar Mamajiwala and Ranjit Studios, so I am skipping that part. In the late 30s and early 40s, i.e. from about 1937 to 1947, Hindi film industry was making films emphasizing social reforms, society needs, peaceful coexistence of different religions and also raising a voice against the sinful customs prevalent then in Indians, all over the country. Some of the topics were, child marriages, marriages between the very young and the old, dowry demands, disowning parents, gambling, criminal activities etc.

Today is 14 march 2018. It was on this day 87 years ago , viz 14 march 1931 that a movie that talked in Hindi (Hindustani) was shown for the first time in Bombay. I don’t think that people those days has any idea that it was an event that would change the lives of Indians as few things had done before. In fact, the industry that would get created as a result would go on to influence not just Indians, but non Indians as well. The Industry, now called Hindi film industry or Bollywood is a shining example of the soft power that India has gone on to wield.

Hullo Atuldom
Remembering today a producer- director who started his career in Bollywood in the year 1948. Our in-house encyclopaedia has already enlightened us that this was as a writer for an AR Kardar film of Filmistan. The other Filmistan movies that carry his name as writer are ‘Anarkali’ (1953), ‘Munimji’ (1955), and ‘Paying Guest’ (1957).

Mohammed Rafi – Duets – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 8

‘क’ – कहिए कैसा मिज़ाज है आपका
ना जाने कौन ये आवाज़ देता है॰ ॰ ॰
The sounds of his voice keep reverberating in the valleys of the mind – the voice that carries a million musical memories of an entire lifetime, unforgettable.
Today’s song in this series is a delightful exchange of young hearts in love. The film is ‘Salaam Memsaab’ from 1961. On screen, the song is performed by a very young Subiraj, and a very enchanting Kum Kum. It is always such a joy to watch Kum Kum on screen with that scintillating smile and the twinkle in the eyes that goes along with it. In a chirpy naughty mood, her expressions and her movements are such a pleasure to see. However, in this clip, I must say, her dance movements are just the typical signature dance steps of Bhagwan. Now Bhagwan is also in this film, and it is a matter of conjecture whether he had some say in the choreography and songs picurization. Maybe he did, the steps in this clip are so very much Bhagwan.

Today’s song is from the 1946 film ‘Alibaba’.
The story of ‘Alibaba And The 40 Thieves‘ has been entertaining the masses of the world since the 18th century. It is a part of the ‘ Arabian Nights’ stories. These stories have been the basis of films in almost every language in every country of the world, including China. But for a few large scale films, most such films fall under stunt / action / costume films or in short C grade films.
