OK, so we come to the Yippeee song for today. The film is ‘Naag Mandir’. Just day before yesterday we have posted a song from this film. And you know, an interesting thing happened. This film has six songs listed in the Geet Kosh. Before yesterday’s post, three songs were on the blog. And then, with yesterday’s post, this film got a double promotion. What with that song being a multi version song, actually two songs on the list – actually same song sung by two different singers – the count got incremented not by 1 but by 2. That is convention we follow on this blog. In case the same song appears more than once in a film, as a multi part song or as a song separately sung by more than one singers, then we include all such multi parts / multi versions in the same post.

Exactly one month and a day – from the time that we hit the last century milestone. The 13800th song had come on to the blog on 10th Dec. And today, 10th Jan, we arrive at the 13900th station of this musical journey. Many congratulations to all members of the bandwagon. We are into another year now, and folks keeping tabs will agree, the pace of postings, and pace of participations has really picked up in the past 10 days. Or to put a positive twist – in the first 10 days of the year. The mind goes back to the whatsapp message on the group – that new year resolutions are but a matter of interest for about a week into the new year. After that, the crowds on the morning walk are back to the thin normal expected for those early hours of the day. 🙂

Missing Films of 1960s – 40

What a find – this song. A lovely tuneful song, sung by Asha Bhosle, and on screen performed by Sheila Ramani. Aah yes, the memorable danseuse of those lovely lilting songs of ‘Taxi Driver’ (1954).

The film is ‘Aawaara Ladki’ from 1967. The Geet Kosh carries very limited information for this film, in the print volume IV. The production company is listed as Skyland Productions, Bombay. The music director is Dhaniram. Two songwriters are listed – Rajnikant and Kaif Irfani. This song is penned by Kaif Irfani.

Going back happily to my favourite decade of the 30’s, here is a song from film ‘Dr. Madhurika’ (1935).

This film was made by Sagar Movietone. 1935 was a period of the early talkie films and the film business was slowly developing into an industry. In the 2-3 years, prior to the advent of sound, the news was already in the air about the silent films soon to start talking and singing on the screen.

is tareh jaao nahin
jaao nahin
jaao nahin. . .

Wish that we could, but we are powerless. We can’t make them stay, ones who have to go away. Jaidev, the master of enchanting melodic creations. His film songs may number just about two hundred. But the impact he left behind him, is incomparable.

Remembering Jaidev on the 30th anniversary of his passing away (6th January, 1987).

Words like ‘tragic’, ‘unsung’, ‘unlucky’, ‘jinxed’ swim through the mind when one considers the life and career of this eminent music director. The only MD in the industry to have bagged three national awards for music direction. And all his life he lived in a one room flat near Churchgate in Bombay – a residence provided by an beneficent music lover. And when that benefactor passed away, his familial survivors reclaimed even that humble dwelling.

Missing Films of 1960s – 39

What luck, I must have missed this song in my online searches earlier when I was looking for songs of missing films from 1964. When I located this song couple of days back, I realize it has been sitting here for almost five years. What luck.

dekh hamen awaaz na dena
o bedard zamaane. . .

The saga of the filmland, the dizzying ups, and the ignominious lows; the crush of fans and lovers, and the loneliness of the nether years; the happy days of spring of success, and the cold desolate days of the winters of anonymity; the words of love and music, and the silent conversations with the past, waiting for a sound. Such is the tale of many an artist that applied their lives to this film world. The whirl of the merry go round does never stop, but comes a day that one cannot hold on – and then what remains is the nausea, the vertigo of having stepped off a speedy whirlwind.

Just take a quick look at the still visual of the video panel below. I am so sure you will recognize this enchanting young face. Yes, it is Tabassum, way back from 1966. And that is not the only captivating thing about this song.
