“Lakshmi” (1982) which was directed by B. S. Thapa; produced by Raja Desai & Raja Roy.

The story was revolving around Reena Roy’s character -Lakshmi; Raj Babbar played her husband Vijay Singh & son Ajay Singh. Ranjeet played a pimp who has a change of heart & emotion when Lakshmi addresses him as ‘Bhaiyya’ & pleads him to help her keep herself ‘GANGA KI TARAH PAVITRA’ inspite of being a courtesan. Nadira played the owner of the ‘Kotha’ where Lakshmi takes refuge in her bid to escape goons. She also has a change of thinking & heart when she sees Ranjeet standing up for Lakshmi when Kadar Khan (in a guest appearance)-playing a daku- tries to molest her. Nadira eventually takes sanyaas but not before seeing Lakshmi give birth to her daughter (she was pregnant with her second child when she had landed at the kotha)

In the hierarchy of Hindi film actors, apart from lead and supporting actors, there is one category of actors who falls between supporting actors and extras. One may call them ‘small role actors’. I found it difficult to identify many actors in this category especially when some of them would be uncredited in the films. One such actor is Ram Sethi whom I had seen in some films of 1970s and 80s. It is only when I joined this Blog in 2011, I came to know that Pyarelal of ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’ (1978) was Ram Sethi. I have also seen him with Amitabh Bachchan in some more films like ‘Laawaaris’ (1981), ‘Yaaraana’ (1981), ‘Kaalia’ (1981), ‘Namak Halaal’ (1982) and ‘Jaadugar’ (1989).

Today’s song is from the film Aangan (1959).

The 50’s decade was the period in India, when after Independence, the entire Nation was trying hard to re-establish old traditions, joint families and building values among the next generation. However, the world was changing, becoming modern and there was a clash of the old and the New. All this, no wonder, was reflected in the films made during that period, because films always reflected the happenings in Society.

In this article, I am taking up for discussion, an obscure Hindi film whose shooting started in 1971 but completely stopped in 1976 for multiple reasons. In the meanwhile, the director left the film. In 1993, the producer of the film took the task of directing the film and completed shooting within one year without the main actor. However, the film could be released only after 37 years from the date of the commencement of the shooting, on April 27, 2008, that too in few theatres of Maharashtra. The name of the film is ‘Yaar Meri Zindagi’ (2008).

Hullo Atuldom

There is this gorgeous lady who made her debut into the Hindi film industry in a title role; the movie released on 28th September 1973. That film was commercially successful, went on to win five awards in that year’s Filmfare Awards. It helped the film’s producer- director come out of debts which he had incurred with his previous magnum-opus debacle. The content of this film was the typical Romeo-Juliet kind of romance, presented in a new style; but the commercial success was attributed to the two-fresh-faced-delightful youngsters who emoted on-screen with ease. Small wonder that they won that year’s Best Actor & Best Actress Filmfare awards.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Trilogy of Shakespeare plays – 1: ‘Maqbool’ (2004).

Williams Shakespeare’s plays have been very popular with the Indian theatres since the theatre movement started sometime in the later 18th century. It was in the late 19th century that some of the famous Shakespeare’s plays were adapted in the Indian theatres in Hindi, Urdu and other prominent regional languages like Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil etc. The plays were molded into Indian socio-economic and political background. With the advent of silent films in India in 1913 and later the sound films from 1931, the film producers also adapted some of the popular Shakespeare’s plays for their films.
