“Chaalis Din” (1959) is an obscure B grade movie that had Premnath, Shakila,Nishi etc in it. According’s to Atul’s axiom,if a movie is an obscure B grade movie, it must have absolutely a grade music in it. 🙂 So here is one such song from this movie .

“Parasmani” (1963) was a B grade Hindi movie of the kind that were typically passed over by the mainstream Hindi movie watchers. But this movie had such stunning music that people sat up and took notice. and the music may have brought substantially more number of people to the movie halls than what a typical B grade movie merited.

During late 1960s and early 1970s, when I was a young kid, I hated the time period between 7-30 AM to 8 AM, because it was during this time that “Puraani filmon ke geet” programme was played on the air by Radio Ceylon. In this programme, songs from 1930s, 1940s and even 1950s were played. The singers were often names that I had never heard of. And their singing styles were found amusing by kids like me.

Earlier decades of Indian independence (1950s and 1960s) saw much enthusiasm for nation building in public life as well as in movies. And Soviet Union style socialism was considered the way to progress. Many movies were made on the theme of nation building in those days. and these movies naturally had songs to inspire people.

When India won the final of the cricket world cup 2011 on 2nd of april, I was so overwhelmed (like millions others) that I was unable to concentrate on anything, and that included discussing songs on this blog. “Bedard Zamaanaa Kyaa Jaane” (1959) was a B grade movie starring Ashok Kumar, Nirupa Roy,Sudesh Kumar, Jabeen Jaleel etc. This movie is quite significant from music point of view. It was with this movie that Kalyanji Veerji Shah made his debut as an independent music director. Till then, he was assisting to other senior music directors viz Hemant Kumar etc. After another movie (Madaari), Kalyanji was joined by his younger brother Anandji and they formed the by now legendary musical partnership known as Kalyanji Anandji.
