Recently four physics students of University of Leicester, UK carried out a study in British Parliament and found out that the hot air produced by the 650 parliamentarians in the house of commons generated 10.34 kW of energy, which if properly harnessed can light up as many as 1000 energy efficient bulbs or 200 conventional bulbs. I realised it only just now, literally at the 11th hour that today (8 march) is the birth anniversary of Sahir Ludhianvi (8 march 1921- 25 october 1980). How could I forget the fact that Sahir Ludhianvi’s birthday falls on the International Women’s day ! This fact was mentioned by Raja while discussing Sahir Ludhianvi song (Aurat ne janam diya mardon ko (Saadhana)) this day two years ago.

In old Hindi movies, especially those of 1950s and 1960s, we often see songs picturised on “Taanga”, also called “Tonga”, not to be confused with a country of this name. 🙂

“Taanga” was actually a mode of public transport in India those days. With time, Taanga has all but vanished as a mode of public transport in India. But they have not become extinct. One can still find them in some small towns of India. I have noticed them in small places in Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh etc. In fact, one can see them in Fatehpur Sikri near Agra in UP. I recall that we (I, my wife and daughter) actually rode on a Taanga to go to Fatehpur Sikri a few years ago.

4th january is the day when R D Burman left for the heavenly abode at quite a young age of 54. He was easily the most influential music director of my formative age, viz 1970s. R D Burman as the music director, Kishor Kumar as the male playback singer and Rajesh Khanna as the male superstar arrived at the scene almost simultaneously and they all left their indelible mark of Hindi movie industry.
