I don’t remember if I have seen the 1960 movie Love in Simla before. But I have heard many of its songs. And one or two songs have remained with me playing in the background of my head. I had marked this movie in the youtube library some time ago and began seeing it recently. The best part about seeing movies on youtube is they come in segments of 12 minutes. And as I was enjoying myself with the CINDERALLA kind of story this particular song came by and I thought “ hey I know this song” then the next step “is it on Atul?” and on searching I find Atuldom has eight songs from this movie but this one is missing.

Lata Mangeshkar has sung with G M Durrani only 11 songs, six of them are light-hearted, teasing or ‘sawaal-jawaab’ (question-answer) type. Here is one of such songs ‘ hello mister dil betaab ho kiske liye’ from the film ANAND BHAWAN (1953) sung by them. The star cast included Manhar Desai, Nigar Sultana, Trilok Kapoor, Durga Khote, Tiwari etc. The film had eight songs of which four each were written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan and Noor Lucknawi. The songs were composed by Vasant Desai. One song from the film has been covered in the blog. The song under discussion was written by Raja Mehdi Ali Khan.

I grew up with the music of late 1960s and early 1970s. That was the time when R D Burman burst into the scene like a tornado. When things settled, the musical scene was totally rearranged with old order finding themselves becoming irrelevant in no time.

“Kab Kyun Aur Kahaan” (1970) was produced and directed by Arjun Hingorani. It was his first movie as a producer. The movie had Dharmendra, Babita, Pran, Helen, Asit Sen, Mohan Choti, Shetty, Pran, Dhumal, Ashoo etc in it. This movie must have done good business. So much so that he made it a point to have three words titles, with each word beginning with K. Take that, Ekta Kapoor ! :).

It is such a frustrating exercise to get information on a poet-lyricist whom I admire for his light romantic and neo-devotional lyrics of Hindi non-filmy songs. Yes, many connoisseurs of Hindi NFSs may have correctly guessed him as Madhukar Rajasthani. I got familiar with his name only because of Vividh Bharati. It is surprising that not much information about him is available on the internet or in any other published materials. There was a time when at least one of the songs written by him used to be played in an early morning programme of devotional songs or in the afternoon programme of sugam sangeet (light semi-classical songs).
