I used to get confused among singers where the name of the singer was mentioned as Kalyani or Miss Kalyani. Some songs were also accredited to Kalyani Das. Are they all the same or are they different singers? It was only after reading the interview of Kalyani Bai (Real name: Zarina) which appeared in Shishir Krishna Sharma’s Blog ‘beetehuedin’ some time in 2012 that I could differentiate between songs accredited as ‘Kalyani’ or ‘Miss Kalyani’ between Kalyani Bai and Kalyani Das. In our Blog, the songs sung by Kalyani Bai has been tagged as ‘Kalyani’ whereas songs sung by Kalyani Das have been tagged as such. So there is no same name confusion in the Blog for both the singers.

NAGAD NARAYAN (1943) was produced in Hindi and Marathi by Baburao Pendharkar under the banner of New Huns Pictures. The Marathi title of the film was ‘Paisa Bolto Aahe’ (1943). Both the versions of the films were directed by Vishram Bedekar. The star cast in Hindi version included Leela Desai, Baburao Pendharkar, Kusum Deshpande, Nayampalli, Masood, Pratima Devi, Shakir etc.

One of the signs of a person which indicates that he has become old is when he starts remembering events that happened during his childhood and younger days, more frequently than before ( I guess, I am on this stage now as I have started going through old photo albums and converting them to JPEG images!!). In the next stage, he starts sharing those events with the younger generations (based on the experiences with the seniors).

“Mr Chakram”(1956) was Produced by Sant Singh-Paachi and directed by S P Bakshi for P S Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Shyama, Ranjan, Roopmala, Sundar, Om Prakash, Chandrashekhar, Randhir, Kumkum, Ramesh Thakur, Abbas, tripathi, Ramlal, Kathana, Mohan etc in it.

The movie had Nirupa Roy, Shahu Modak, Vanmala, Sapru, B M Vyas, Niranjan Sharma, Lalita Pawar, Shanta Kunwar, Radha, Dhuliya, Lathani, Amina, Munnas, Anwari, Pratibha, Ramesh Tiwari, Dilip Pahalwan, M Tandon, Baby Naaz, Pappu etc in it.

Thereafter, in the 1940s, films like ‘Maasoom’ (1941), ‘Yaad’ 1942), ‘Naukar’ (1943) ‘Najma’ (1943), ‘Ismat’ (1944), ‘Zeenat’ (1945), ‘Pehli Nazar’ (1945), ‘Nek Parween’ (1946), ‘Shama’ (1946), ‘Dard, (1947), ‘Elan’ (1947), ‘Kaneez’ (1949) etc were released and most of them which became box office successes.

Today (20 january 2017) is the 12th death anniversary of Parveen Babi (4 April 1949 – 20 January 2005). She was the classiest and prettiest leading actress of 1970s as far as I was concerned. Unlike most other leading actresses of her time, she sadly had a disturbed life post retirement when she suffered from mental disorders viz paranoia, schzopheria etc and she met with an anonymous death staying alone. Her death in fact was discovered on 22 january 2005 after her residential society secretary alerted the police that she had not collected milk and newspapers from her doorstep for three days. Police speculated that she was dead for about 72 hours before her body was discovered. That is how her death has been estimated to have taken place on 20 january 2005.
