As a new entrant to the blog and to the field of blogging, an introduction is in order. A few mutual friends know me by reputation if not by virtue of meeting me in person . For example, Raja pai has had the misfortune of stumbling into me twice. Once in NYC and then again in Hyderabad. Atul has the dubious distinction of being a very good online friend of mine.

Troika of the latest century singers – Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore – 1. Mukesh
——————————————————————————-

Sometime in the middle of April 2015, I had sent two write-ups to Atul ji and coincidentally, both these write-ups were on the songs sung by Mukesh. Atul ji sent me a reply saying that for the time being, he was avoiding posting songs of Mukesh as also of Rafi who are on their way to hitting centuries of their songs in the Blog. So he reckoned that my write ups on Mukesh’s songs may have to be held back for a few days. It was apparent that articles for the special events had already been planned.

A click on ‘Some stats’ page of the Blog revealed that while Mukesh was close to attaining his 700th song, Mohammed Rafi was only one short of his 2400th song in the Blog. A further glance on this page revealed that Kishore Kumar too was also very close to hitting his 900th song. So it was rare ‘celestial’ event like that of conjunction of planets Jupiter, Venus and Mars in the triangle shape which is expected on October 28, 2015. And all the three playback singers are nothing less than celestial stars along with Talat Mehmood and Manna Dey. There was an inner urge in me to pay tributes to the troika of playback singers on this unique conjunction of century songs. A thought tickled in my mind. What if I was to select special songs for the troika of playback singers on the occasion?

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM….Song No. 3
——————————————-

Today’s song is from film Namumkin-46. It is a duet of Shamshad Begum and K.S.Ragi.

We are accustomed to see only the usual regular well known names, but when some new or unknown name appears, our brows are raised and we wonder who this singer is. Same thoughts came to my mind when I first came across his name few years back. One would immediately think of the singers in a Gurudwara, who are also called Raagis. I tried and tried very hard, but except that he hailed from Andhra pradesh, I could not get any other information on him. Then one fine morning K S Ragi’s daughter appeared on RMIM forum and gave some more information. Though even this was very meagre, still at least something was there.

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Today’s selection is in the voice of Geeta Dutt.  Coming to think of it, it is just these two voices that have the capacity and the capability to make a foot tapper song – Asha Bhosle and Geeta Dutt. I cannot think of any other female singer who can manage songs of the type we are discussing in this series.  There could be exceptions but I cannot readily recall any right away.

VINTAGE SHAMSHAD BEGUM…..Song No. 2
—————————————–

Today’s song is from film Ratnavali-45. Not a very well known name. Even in those days,it was not a film known by many ! But it had very good songs. This was a costume film made by Amar Pictures.

Amar Pictures was owned by Chimanlal Desai- who had established Sagar movietone in 1930 along with Dr. Ambalal Patel. Both were actually in Distribution business, but they entered film production line with the help of Ardeshir Irani of Imperial Film Company. Dr. Patel left Sagar around 1936 to go back to his Distribution business again and Chimanlal left Sagar in 1939 to form National Studios, joining hands with RCA’s Yusuf Fazalbhoy.

This article is the 11100th song post in the blog.

“Sone Pe Suhaaga”, as we say in India.  First it was the momentous 10K milestone in July last year (20 Jul 2014).  Then a little while ago, on the close of the previous financial year (31 Mar, 2015) we had the auspicious and ‘Badhaai Waala” 11K milestone. And then today, we have the next level ‘1’ added, taking the auspiciousness and ‘badhaai’ to the next level on the scale.

Welcome all to the next important century milestone on this blog.  After we had the invasion of the blog by an army of eleven thousand young ladies, I mean, after the “Gyaarah Hazaar Ladkiaan” made their auspicious and enchanting appearance a little over a month ago, we have added another 100 wonderful songs to bag of magic that this blog is now transforming into. This segment has been relatively slower, taking exactly thirty two days to complete this leg of the journey. Of course we have an excuse for it.  But we are not going to talk about it today.  Maybe someday later, hopefully sooner than later.  But not today.  After getting over with the customary greetings and welcome and congratulations, I want to talk about a friend, a very dear friend.  And in our lingua-franca, the term ‘a dear friend’ evidently implies a lover of music.

Fabulous Foot Tappers – 1

The write up on this music director by AK ji (see here) opens with the lead in comment, that “. . . his music towers over his films”.  I am whole heartedly in agreement with this comment.  As he goes on to say that just “. . . one song of his – “Paas Baitho Tabiyat Bahal Jaayegi” (‘Punarmilan’, 1964) sung by Rafi Sb is enough to give him immortality.”  And then one reviews the list of films with him as the music director – ‘Main Aur Mera Bhai’ (1961), ‘Punar Milan’ (1964), ‘Ek Saal Pehle’ (1965), ‘Chale Hain Sasural’ (1966), ‘Suhsila’ (1966) aka ‘Subah Zaroor Aayegi’ (1977), and then of course the iconic ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’ (1975) – the film that gave its run for the money, in a stiff competition to the big time grosser of the same year (viz. ‘Sholay’), and still continues to be on the list top grossing films of all time.  About two decades of active work in the industry, with just sixteen films listed against his name.  But then, as AK ji says, it is just one song that confers immortality on him.

Remembering music director C Arjun on the anniversary of his passing away today (30 April).

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 6
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Listening to songs like this one, there are mixed feelings in the heart.  There is a pleasant joyous feeling that such wonderful sounds from almost eight decades ago, are available  and we can hear and enjoy them.  There is also a regretful irritation, almost bordering on frustration as to why more such songs are not available.  Why is it that all one can search and explore, and just one song is available from this film, and from many others.  And for many more, even one song is not traceable.

The Wonderful Sounds of 1930s – 5
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

What to write about the voice for which no information is apparently traceable.  Many artists of the 1930s have become obscure.  The Indian cinema industry is notorious for ignoring its own history and roots.  There have been no industry supported or sponsored programs or efforts aimed as compiling and collating the history of its own.

Akbar Khan Durrani Peshawari – a voice that appears to be a trained classical singer, has no traceable information available, other than of course the listings in the Geet Kosh, that identify maybe about 5 songs sung by him. Searching on the YouTube, one can locate maybe about four or five of his songs, all of which are not identified in the Geet Kosh.  There are two songs from the film ‘Sultaana’ (1934), which are available in his voice.  Both are wonderful gems – “Kitaab e Dard mein Likha Mere Gham Ka Fasaana Hai” and “Mushkil Kushaa Hai Naam Tera”.  On the blog, we have one more song in his voice already posted; the film is ‘Postman’ (1938) and the song “Hauslaa Aashiq Ko Chaahiye Dil Ko Lagaane Ke Liye“.

One of the 8 films made and released in 1938 from the ‘factory’ of Ranjit Movietone was an obscure movie PROFESSOR WAMAN, M.Sc. (1938). The film, belonging to the genre of crime and mystery, was directed by Manibhai Vyas who made his debut as a director with this film. The star cast included E. Billimoria, Mazhar Khan, Sunita Devi, Beg, Sitara Devi, Rajkumari, Waheedan Bai etc. The film had 8 songs written by P L Santoshi and were set to music by Gyan Dutt. The film was released on 10th December 1938.
