“Chitralekha” (1941) was produced and directed by Kidar Sharma. This movie, which was based on a Bhagwati Charan Verma novel of the same name had Mehtab in title role with Nandrekar, A S Gyani, Rajendra , Monica Desai , Ram Dulari, Leela Mishra, Ganpatrai Premi and Bharat Bhushan (making his debut in Hindi movies) etc also there in the movie.

According to information contained in YT, The movie had Mehtab in the title role of Chitralekha. Other leading actors in the movie were Nandrekar (as Samant Bijgupt), A.S. Sometimes some producers get so obsessed with a story that they devote a good portion of their career to make a movie on that story. For instance, K Asif had planned “Mughal e Azam” as early as 1940s itself and it took him nearly two decades of time and enormous resources to finally bring his dream project to fruition in 1960 with different lead actors than what was originally planned. Likewise, Kamal Amrohi’s “Pakeezaa” was in the making for a decade or more before it finally got completed and released in 1972. By that time the lead actress and the music director of the movie were no longer around.

In the early era there was a fair exchange of film themes and music between all the centres of film production like Bombay, Lahore, Calcutta, Madras, Poona and Kolhapur( and Hyderabad and Bangalore at a later time). That is why sometimes Bilingual films were made. Madras was not directly interested in making films in Hindi upto 1948,till Vasan’s CHANDRALEKHA-48 had an All India release with over 700 prints, in those days.

“Rangeen Raaten” (1956) was an Ambitious Pictures Production. It was directed by Kidar Sharma. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Geeta Bali, Mala Sinha, Chand Usmani, Pesi Patel, Rohit, Bhupendra Kapoor etc in it. Yes, it was one of rare movie where Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali had acted together.

“Neelkamal” (1947) was directed by Kidar Sharma. He had signed up Raj Kapoor, then working as his third assistant (viz clap boy) as the hero of this movie. When Raj Kapoor enquired which heroine was being signed up opposite him, Kidar Sharma asked him if he had any specific choice. Raj Kapoor named Madhubala who was then signed up for the movie.
