Mukesh is reputed to be a singer par excellence as far as sad songs were concerned. But I am finding that Mukesh was a singer par excellence for romantic songs as well. The kinds of songs where he sings for the lady sound so sincere and sensuous that these songs have no option but to straighaway walk into the hall of fame of immortal songs.

Here is yet another Rafi-Shammi Kapoor song which is sung and picturised with the same passion which we have come to associate with such songs. Hasrat Jaipuri is the lyricist and Shankar Jaikishan are the music director, as was the case in majority of such songs.

It was a much loved song when it first started playing on loudspeakers and radio. And as happened with many songs of those days, it was soon forgotten, though it was one song that was very cute and adorable to listen to.

I had once wondered what I would do if I run out of all Rafi-Shammi songs. Then I realised that I need not worry. In case I have no more Rafi-Shammi songs to listen to, I always had the option of listening to the songs picturised on Shammi Kapoor clones. And these songs sounded just as good. There was Joy Mukherjee ( similar in appearance to Shammi Kapoor ans sometimes nearly as good) and there was also Vishwajeet ( smaller built and therefore described as poor man’s Shammi Kapoor).

I may not be the only person to note that majority of songs in Bollywood are about love. In these songs, the lead actors would fall in love and then sing love songs.

Nainon mein darpan hai

This is a duet sung by Lata and Kishore Kumar,two of the biggest names among playback singers. But the same cannot be said about the lyricist and the music director, both of whom were debutants. Maya Govind was the lyricist. She was arguably the first female lyricist in Bollywood. Bhupen Hazarika, known more for his playback singing was the music director of this movie.

I have listened to this song for the first time only now. And this song is from a 1964 movie called Shabnam. The music director is Usha Khanna, but the lyricist is an unknown person for me called Jawed Anwar.
