Nowhere other than in love, is the weight felt more heavily of sarcasm of that age old phrase – “promises are meant to be broken”. After the flowers and dreams, the sun and the stars, it is inevitable that the reality checks in. The reality of life that is – the reality of relations, the reality of social variances, the reality of the difficulties of life that will incessantly continue to overwhelm, and above all the realities of personalities. More often than not, it is the personal motivations, personal desires and dogmas, personal fancies and choices, that manifest as roadblocks and potholes on the road to satisfied love. Those who are not well adept at managing and driving around these obstacles, more often than not, find themselves in the wells of misery.

Long ago during weddings in the family, couple of my aunts who were fond of singing, would start this singing session, among ladies. There were a few peppy songs, but I am remmbering a couple of songs now like ‘chhod baabul ka ghar mohe pi ke nagar’ from Baabul’ (1950) and ‘baalam se milan hogaa sharmaane ke din aaye’ from ‘ Chaudhvi ka chand ‘. They would sing it in chorus in Shamshad Begum style. They probabaly had no inkling that the song from Baabul is a sad song, and song from ‘Chaudhvi ka chand’ is by Geeta Dutt.
