Vishal Bhardwaj’s Trilogy of Shakespeare plays – 1: ‘Maqbool’ (2004).

Williams Shakespeare’s plays have been very popular with the Indian theatres since the theatre movement started sometime in the later 18th century. It was in the late 19th century that some of the famous Shakespeare’s plays were adapted in the Indian theatres in Hindi, Urdu and other prominent regional languages like Bengali, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil etc. The plays were molded into Indian socio-economic and political background. With the advent of silent films in India in 1913 and later the sound films from 1931, the film producers also adapted some of the popular Shakespeare’s plays for their films.

Today’s song is a funny video song featuring Master Bhagwan and Tun Tun, from the film Lucky Number-1961.

This so-called ‘social film’ was almost a C grade Murder-Mystery film having unknown directors and B and C grade actors, who were on the waning career road. It was produced and directed by Man Mohan Sabir under his own banner Man Mohan Films, Bombay. he had Mohan Rathod, the film’s editor as his Co-Director. man mohan Sabir had also written 4 of the 7 songs of this film. 2 Songs were by Anand Bakshi and 1 song was by actor David, who was also acting in this film. Looks like that the film was made on a very economical budget by taking multitasking artistes !

In this article, I propose to explore two films – ‘Duvidha’ (1973) directed by Mani Kaul and ‘Paheli’ (2005) directed by Amol Palekar. Both these films are based on a short story, ‘Duvidha’ by the writer of Rajasthani literature and Sahitya Akademy Award winner, Vijaydan Detha (popularly known as ‘Bijji’). Bijji wrote the short story in 1958 by using a verbally transmitted Rajasthani folktale to convey a bride’s silent defiance of the prevailing patriarchal system by embracing a ghost as her husband when her real husband leaves for a faraway town on business for 5 years, two days after the marriage. The defiance came from the fact that her husband did not take into consideration his wife’s emotional needs while taking this decision. The author has used the metaphor of the ghost through which the wife’s silent revolt occurs.

Hullo Atuldom

At the outset let me wish an active Atulite on his birthday. These days his status has changed from ‘active’ to ‘hyper-active’ Atulite. He is the major guest contributor for the blog these days. It is almost like he has taken it upon himself that the blog should continue its race towards centuries at superfast pace; so much so that, the century number 174 happened in 28 days- the fastest since 23rd March 2018. In fact January 2023 saw a 100 posts- the last time this happened was also in March of 2018 (118 posts). 53 of the 100 posts of January was by this hyper-active guest contributor who goes by the name Avinash Scrapwala- and it should be kept in mind that none of his posts are SCRAP they are all good to read with accurate lyrics and most of his 688 posts have lyrics in Devnagri script too. (the number for this stands at 410).

Today’s song is a Special song having a Historical Value. It is from the film Andhon ki Duniya-1947.

There is a solid reason why I am calling this song a Special song with Historical value. Every singer has a First song in his career. For an ordinary or a less famous singer this First song has no problem, but in the case of an established, famous, Popular and for one who has sung in several languages, the First Song has many cousins. First song means which song ? Is it the First recorded song, or the First released song, or First song in any language or First song in Hindi Film or First song filmed on the singer on screen or the First Playback song in Hindi film or a First song as NFS or a first solo song ?

98th birth anniversary of Mohammed Rafi sahab

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 11

How the human mind works and the vagaries of human memory system, the scientists are still figuring out. I, for one, am very grateful that my memory brings forth to the mind a significant Rafi song to write a post at the most unexpected moment.

Today’s song is from a dubbed Tamil film bearing the name in Hindi as Ek Tha Raja-1951.

It is merely a coincidence that in a span of only few days, I am writing again on a dubbed film from south. That too, featuring 2 of the most influential, ambitious and successful actors who turned into equally successful politicians, formed new political parties and became Chief Ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu respectively – N.T.Rama Rao and M.G Ramachandran.

Today’s song is an interesting Trio from an old film Ghayal-1951.
