It is now a time tested experience. If I need to locate a real gem of a song for a particular artist, I simply search for one in completely obscure films that one may have just heard of. This technique has served well on many occasions in the past. And once again today. For this post, I wanted to locate a song that befits the memories of the artist. And as I checked out the films, I narrowed down on this one – ‘Dark Street’ from 1961. As I checked the song lists of this film, sure enough, hiding away here in this almost unknown film is this gem of a melody that is created by Dattaram.
Remembering Dattaram on the anniversary of his passing away today (8th June).

Aah, the wonderful world of Chitragupt’s melodies. A composer par excellence, whose creations do never cease to surprise, as one continues to come encounter heretofore songs that seemed to have got lost in the folds of time. This song today is a very old friend from the radio listening days, that dipped below the horizons of memories for some time.

When I first saw Chetan Anand’s ‘Haqeeqat’ (1964), on TV, I was a pre teen kid, not old enough to really appreciate the human pathos and the emotions involved in the storyline. But of course, there are a few passages and images that simply stuck to my mind. Randomly they would pass through the mind’s screen. This would continue for many, many years till the time I revisited the film, and then sat through it for a complete view. This was after I had read a lot about this film, its background, its actors, and its impact on the public mind during those troubled war years of 1960s and early 1970.

What may be a good definition of a friend? I am sure everyone will have many an answer to this question. I would like to add this following definition to that list today. A good friend is one who will remind you of a wonderful melodious song, that you may have heard long back, and have forgotten about it, or maybe you have not heard it and he or she introduced you to it. Aa ha, I am sure you will agree with me on this. 🙂

“Dillagi” (1978) was directed by Basu Chatterji. It was a romantic comedy which I had not liked during its time when I watched this movie. Perhaps I was too young for a movie on this topic at that time. 🙂 The movie had Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Mithu Mukherji, Deven Verma, Asrani, Preeti Ganguly, Keshto Mukherji, Shatrughan Sinha etc in it.
