Main wohi wohi baat

Today (6 november) is the 27th death anniversary of Sanjeev Kumar. When most of his contemporary actors were content to get typedcast in certain kinds of roles and would spend their entire career playing the same kinds of role, Sanjeev Kumar would play just about any kind of character that he was offered. While signing up movies, he did not worry about the impact of that role on his star value. To worry about one’s stardom was for lesser actors, not for Sanjeev Kumar , who could play roles that most heroes would summarily reject. Sanjeev Kumar played roles of deaf and dumb (Koshish), pimp (Manoranjan), Old man (in several movies), mad (Khilona) etc. His star value remained undiminished, no matter what kind of roles he played in his movies.

It is a known fact that popular thumris (or ghazals) ascribed to the original classical and ghazal singers have also been sung by a few other doyens of Hindustani classical and ghazal singers. For instance, Bade Ghulam Ali Khan sang two thumris – ‘yaad piya ki aaye’ and ‘aaye na baalam kaa karu sajani’ to express his grief over the loss of his beloved wife in 1932, which became so popular that many classical singers in the concerts would get ‘farmaish’ to sing these two thumris. Similarly, Shakeel Badayuni’s ghazal ‘ae mohabbat tere anjaam pe ronaa aaya’ which was made immortal by Begum Akhtar’s rendition in early 50s, has been sung by many renowned ghazal singers. In the filmy parlance, these become version renditions of thumris and ghazals.

It’s been a while since my last post here. And I feel pretty bad about it. Somehow, in the last month (or more), I’ve just not been able to generate the required mental juice to be able to come up with anything worth putting on paper (or on electronic media). Had Shakespeare been around and had one look at me, he’d have promptly coined something like “Listlessness, thou hast what human spirit conquer’d, For Man knoweth not whence he cometh, and where he goeth”.

Today (16 october) is the 64th birthday of Hema Malini. She ruled the roost in 1970s. So much so that she was described as dream girl by the media. To capitalise on this sobriquet, Pramod Chakraborty actually made a movie called “Dream Girl” (1977) signing up Hema Malini and Dharmendra.
