Today’s song is from the film Pyar ki Manzil-1950.

The sudden and unexpected death of Saigal, followed by India’s partition had disturbed the entire film industry. The major centres – Calcutta and Bombay – both had benefited with the songs of Saigal. A large number of Muslim community, working in different departments of filmmaking, had migrated to Pakistan, disturbing the set up. Luckily, India had a very capable second line of talented artistes waiting in the wings. It took 2-3 years for them to show their abilities, thus the period of 1947 to 1950 was full of uncertainties and testing the new entrants.

Today’s song is from the film Daasi-1944.

This film was made by Pradhan films, Lahore.

In the Pre-Partition period, there were some important film centres like Bombay, Poona, Kolhapur, Calcutta and Lahore, as far as Hindi/Urdu films were concerned. Though comparatively Lahore was the youngest center, having made its first silent film only in 1924, experts across the border and in India claim that Lahore had the potential of becoming, if not bigger, but as big a center as Bombay ! In that era Lahore did make a lot of contribution in the field of acting, direction and music. Several experts have written long articles on Lahore’s standing in Hindi and Punjabi film making.

Today’s song is from a Cult Film ” Har Har Mahadev”-1950.

I have mentioned several times here that our family was a Kattar Shiv Bhakt. So, it was no wonder that we all saw every film collectively, which had some connection to Lord Shiva. Film Har Har Mahadev-1950 was afterall a ‘Cult’ film, so there was no count how many times we saw this film. In the later years too, whenever this film came for the 2nd, 3rd or ‘N’th re run, I had seen it.

Today’s song is from “one of a kind” of a film – Kinaara-1949.

This was a film made by New India Theatres, Bombay. It was directed by Ambalal Dave, for whom it was the only and the last individually directed film. Same year he had directed one more film jointly with Narayan Patel (another first and last timer) – Roop Sundari-1949. Not only this, but Madhusudan Acharya had written the film’s story, screenplay and dialogues too. He had acted in this film as a Hero and also sang one solo and one duet in the film. These again were the first and last time songs in any Hindi film. Now the readers will realise why I called this film “one of a kind’ film !

Today’s song is a NFS – NON-FILM SONG – of 1945, sung by Juthika Roy.

During my early years of writing on this Blog, I had run a series “The joy of NFS” in the month of June 2014, in which I had discussed 10 NFS songs by different singers. I have been a great fan of NFS, because in my younger age I was listening to them from time to time. However, the last NFS I wrote about was more than almost 2 years ago. While checking on Youtube for some other song, I accidentally saw this song and I was tempted to write on it. This song is uploaded by the well known collector Syed Zafar Shah, who has been generously uploading many old songs. May God increase his tribe !
