“Lahore” (1949) was based on the aftermath of India’s partition following independence. This movie was a Jaimini Dewan production and it was directed by M L Anand. The movie had Karan Dewan, Nargis, Om Prakash, Randhir, Balakram, Ram Avtaar etc in it.

The Voice of Mukesh #24

We come to 1948 now. From the previous years, i.e. from 1942 to 1947, all songs of Mukesh, as per current records, are now posted on this blog. With one exception. I am still trying to trace the Mukesh – Shamshad Begum duet from ‘Laakhon Mein Ek’, the one song still to be posted for 1947.

During the early 70s when I got interested in Hindi film songs of the golden era. I had heard from my seniors in this field talking about singers, music directors and lyricists of 30s and 40s with some anecdotes. While, I had almost forgotten many of the unfamiliar names over a period of time until the advent of the internet technology, one of very few names which firmly remained in my mind was that of D N Madhok. From their discussions, I had then realised that he must have been an influential lyricist of his time. Another reason often mentioned is the simplicity and the lack of awareness of the machinations of the film world. An innocent contravention, and the anchor support was taken away. And then the talent transmogrified into another role. And the resulting fun and laughter, then lasted a good half a century.

Remembering Uma Devi on the anniversary of her birth today – 11th July, 2013.

The Voice of Mukesh #23

Wow, probably the best specimen of a ‘roothna – manaana’ song, if ever there was one. And done with such merriment and such a ticklish and playful performance by both the parties involved. I am glad the video of this song is available. Even after 66 years, the effect of this song and its visual has such a rollicking effect. I am sure you are going to love this song.
