Till 1970s, Radio Ceylon Hindi service had “Puraani filmon ke geet” programme from 7-30 to 8 AM every day. The last song of the programme was invariably a K L Saigal song.

This song is from 1949, just after independence. The song is recorded under primitive technological conditions, still the quality of this recording is very good. The voice of Suraiyya can still enthrall the listeners.

When one listens to old song, one needs to have some appreciation of history, otherwise one tends to judge old songs by present day standards and thus he/ she may do grave injustice to old songs while making hasty judgements about them.

It is a very old song from a movie called “Do bhai” (1947) and this song was sung by Geeta Roy ( later Geeta Dutt). This song made her an overnight sensation.

“Ankhen” (1950) was the debut movie of Madan Mohan as a music director. He used quite a few singers as well as lyricists in this movie. I have already posted a song that was sung by Raj Khosla whose lyrics were written by B D Mishra.
