Unlike advanced nations, preserving history is given little importance in India. Hindi film music is no exception. Governnment and Hindi movie industry, who naturally have the biggest say in this field have not taken any concrete steps to preserve (and share) the artifacts of this art form.
So, it is left to private individuals who through their efforts have managed to preserve it and who share it with other music lovers.

Behzad Lucknowi was one of many Urdu poets who entered Hindi film industry in the 1930s. However, in my view, he was also one of the least visible poet-lyricists among those who had spent over a decade in the Hindi film industry in the 1930s and 1940s. Some of his high quality ghazals like zinda hoon iss tarah ki gham-e-zindagi nahin, tumhaare bulaane ko jee chaahta hai, rehne laga hai dil mein andhera tere baghair are still remembered today. Most listeners of these ghazals would identify these songs with Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar and Begum Akhtar, respectively, as it so often happens in case of popular Hindi film songs.

The history of Lahore film industry is as old as the era of silent films. When talkies started getting produced from early 1930s, the Lahore film industry seems to have lost the race to Bombay (Mumbai) and Calcutta (Kolkata) in producing Hindi/Urdu films. Many film artists based in Lahore started migrating to Calcutta and Bombay looking for greener pastures. But the decade of 1940s saw two prominent Lahore based film productions companies holding their own against the big production houses of Bombay and Calcutta viz. Bombay based Ranjit Movietone and Bombay Talkies and Calcutta based New Theatres. They were Pancholi Art Pictures of Dalsukh Pancholi and Shorey Pictures of Roop K Shorey.
