#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————
Today’s lovely song is in the voice of Suman Kalyanpur and it is from the movie ‘Coffee House-1957’.
‘Coffee House-1957’ was passed by the Censor Board on 26.03.1957. This movie was directed by Hari Walia who was also the producer of this movie, for Neeti Art Productions, Bombay. The cast of this movie had Geeta Bali, Shammi Kapoor, Vijaylakshmi, Chanchal, Jeevan, Kumud Tripathi, Pal Sharma, Rajan Kapoor, Bhagwan, Helen, and others.
It has been mentioned in a previous post on the blog that the prints of this movie were lost. I guess that there is very less information available about this movie and its songs. Obviously no videos of this movie are available.
‘Coffee House-1957’ has eight songs in it. Prem Dhawan penned six songs. Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri wrote one song each. Music for this movie was composed by Roshan.
The singers for this movie are Asha Bhonsle, Geeta Dutt and Suman Kalyanpur which means all the songs in this movie were sung by female singers. Not only that, these songs are all female solo songs. One of these songs has female chorus as well.
The song unde discussion is that song which has female chorus accompanying the main singer viz. Suman Kalyanpur.
This is the only song in this movie in the voice of Suman Kalyanpur. Other songs are sung by Asha Bhonsle (four songs) and Geeta Dutt(three songs).
Three songs from this movie have been covered on the blog so far. Today we are going to listen to the fourth song from this movie ‘Coffee House-1957’. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist and music is composed by Roshan.
Let us now listen to this joyous dance song.

#the Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————
In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Taajposhi-1957’. This movie had made its debut on the blog long back on 03.01.2014. No songs from this movie were posted on this blog thereafter; the non-availability of these songs on internet might have been the reason behind this. However, now I noticed that some songs from this movie (if not all) are available on internet. And when I looked for this song which has the voice of Talat Mahmood, and found that it is available, I am taking this opportunity to present it here.
This song is a duet song in the voices of Asha Bhonsle and Talat Mahmood.

Today’s song is from the film Usha Kiran-1952.
In the month of September-2014, I had started a series on this Blog, titled “songs from Artists’ name films”. It ran from 18-9-2014 to 8-10-2014. I covered 10 films like Madhubala-1950, Nargis-1946, Veena-1948, Renuka-1947, Madhuri-1932, Hurricane hansa-1937, Zubeida-2001, Kamla-1946 and Asha-1948. When I came to the 10th and the last film Usha Kiran-1952, I realised that actress Usha Kiran was not in the cast of that film. In all other films, then discussed, the titled actress was in its cast. I was shocked. Nevertheless, I wrote the article and sent it for posting. But then on, I became alert and checked all the films selected for any series, fully and carefully.

He was born in Kaliawadi, near Navsari,Gujaratrat, on 31-1-1908. He started at Sharda studios in 1927 by assisting A.P.Kapoor. He completed Gujarati film’ Maya no Rang’,which was left unfinished by P.V.Chavan and Sunder rao Nadkarni, when Bhogilal Dave took over his United Pics Syndicate in 1929. His early work was in silent films of action ( 17 silent films), in Sharada and later with Indulal Yagnik.

Today’s song is from the ” Kam sune – Unsune ” film Pensioner-1954.
When you say that ‘Colgate is No. 1 Toothpaste’, it does not mean that everyone in India uses Colgate. It only means that the majority of people use Colgate and hence it is called No. 1 toothpaste. The decade of the 1950s was known as’ The Golden Era of Film Music’. It did not mean that there were no films with mediocre or poor music. It only means maximum films had wonderful music. In this decade there were few – only few – films whose music was not famous, for whatever reasons. Today’s film was one such film.
In the war period from 1939 to 1945, the British Government in India had coaxed the filmmakers to make films which would help the war efforts. These were called ‘ Propaganda Films’ and the Government gave special subsidies and other concessions ( like extra quota of Raw Film at control rates) to the producer. During the 1950s the Indian Government wanted to boost the ‘Small Savings’ habit among the citizens. Some films were made upholding this scheme. Today’s film Pensioner-1954 was one such film.

(Lyricist Kavi Pradeep-35)
—————————–
Today’s Kavi Pradeep song is from the movie ‘Chandi Poojaa-1957’. Kavi Pradeep is also the singer of this song, and it gives me immense pleasure to add one more song sung by him on this blog.
This movie ‘Chandi Poojaa-1957’ was directed by Raman B. Desai for ‘New Precious Pictures, Bombay’. Dinu M. Desai was the Producer of this movie. The cast of this movie had Nirupa Roy, Manhar Desai, Prem Adib, Shanta Apte, Malay Sarkar, Sapru, Pande, Sangeeta, Narbada Shankar, Hansraj, Sudheer, Moni Chatterjee and others. ‘Chandi Pujaa or Chandi Poojaa-1957’ was passed by Censor Board on 19.07.1957. Geet Kosh Vol-III (1951-1960) mentions in the foot-note on the page of this movie that this movie ‘Chandi Pujaa’ was the last movie of actress Shanta Apte.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film – HariHar Bhakti-1956.
1956 was the Silver Jubilee year of Indian Talkie Films. This year, the most successful films were entertainers. There were of course some films carrying social messages. One of them was ‘Jaagte Raho’ (‘Ek Din Ratre’ in Bangla), which tried to bring out the upper middle class hypocrisy in a metro city like Bombay. Initially, the film did not make any ripples, but after it won International awards, it became very popular. (People of other nations have to tell us that our film is good !). A social message, excellent music and solid story – the hallmarks of an RK film were all there in it.

#The Decade of Fifties – 1951 – 1960 #
————————————————————————
Today 20th August 2025 is the forty-first Remembrance anniversary of music director Avinash Vyas ((21 July 1912 – 20 August 1984). On this occasion I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Dashaavataar-1951’ where Avinash Vyas was the music director.
After getting associated with this blog I had got many opportunities to listen to and share the songs composed by Avinash Vyas ji. Though I was not aware of his great contribution towards Hindi Cinema and Gujarati Cinema and Non-Film music in Gujarati. In my childhood I must have watched many black & white Hindi movies where music was composed by Avinash Vyas, but I was unaware of this fact. However, the song ‘tere dwaar khadaa bhagwaan’ from ‘Waaman Avtaar-1955’ is my all-time favourite and I would also like to mention the songs from ‘Chakradhaari-1954’ which I watched during my stay at Nagpur (exactly nine years back around this time i.e. 15/16 August 2016) where I liked all the wonderful songs this movie has.

We in this blog have achieved several milestones, but this milestone is something in its own league. Today we are celebrating a humongous individual milestone. With this post, Lata Mangeshkar reaches 4000 songs as a playback singer in this blog !
More than one decade ago, She had touched 1000 songs in the blog as the blog itself touched 3000 songs. Imagine, today she alone touches 4000 songs in the blog.
I had run a series on Lata Mangeshkar’s songs (yearwise) in the blog. That series, which ran every monday for 63 weeks (viz for one year and three months). In that series we had an indepth look at the list of songs that Lata Mangeshkar had sung in Hindi movies.

Today’s song is from a Mythological film – Tilottama-1954.
Made by Basant Pictures of Homi Wadia, it was directed by the Trick Master Babubhai Mistry. Music was by the multitasking expert S.N.Tripathi. The cast included Chitra, Kailash, Maruti, Babu raje, Indira Bansal, Heera Sawant, B.M.Vyas and a long list of small time actors, who were regulars in such films. The Lyrics were by G.S.Nepali.
Tilottama was an extraordinarily beautiful apsara from the Swarga. She was especially created by Vishwakarma on Brahma ji’s suggestion. The first chapter of mahabharata – The Adi Parva – mentions that Maharshi Narad detailed the story of Tilottama to Pandavas and warned them that one Draupadi as a wife to 5 Pandavas could become a cause of conflict and that they must be careful about it.
