Today’s song is from the C grade Costume film Simba-1951.
I was a great fan and admirer of C grade action/stunt/costume films from my young age. The decorative sets and the unusually long, shining and attractive costumes in the films, the daredevil stunts and the hand or the sword fighting in these films impressed me. Unfortunately, as I grew older, the number of such films was reducing and by the time I almost stopped running after films by the 1970 beginning, C grade action, stunt and Costume films almost disappeared from the theatres. Perhaps their regular audience thinned out or the stuntmen became old or producers of such films turned to other more respectable Genres. Whatever the reason, reality was that the end of such films had occurred !

This blog started on the first day of shrawan (which fell on 19 july 2008) and that month of shrawan ended on 16 august 2008. Last day of the month of Shrawan which happens to be shrawan purnima is celebrated as the festival of Rakhi.
In other words, the blog started on the first day of shrawan and it had its first rakhi festival day exactly on the last date of that month.
All this was without any planning at the human level. It was destiny ordaining all these without the knowledge of us mortals. I have discovered this fact only now, 16 years later, as I took up the task of penning an article for this year’s rakhi festival.

78th Independence day – 15th August, 2024
The nation grows older by one more year on 15th August. And hopefully wiser too. Among the nations formed in 20th century, post world wars scenario, we have indeed come a long way, and hopefully shall grow, by leaps and bounds.
The cultural conflux and amalgamation, is what makes this country what it is, that the world looks up to us for the colourful heritiage, for the values of humanity, for intellectual and literary wealth.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.
I remember there was another film of the same title made in 1937, starring the stunt Hero Navinchandra Joshi and Gohar Karnataki – sister of actress/singer Amirbai Karnataki. The other name of that film was ‘Shareef Badmash’. I was wondering as to what was the real meaning of ” Guru Ghantal”. When I tried to find out, I learnt that Guru Ghantal means a Cheater, a very cunning or extra clever person, who is not what he claims to be !

Today’s song is from the film ‘Naqabposh’ (1956).
I am from that generation, which lived in a joint family. There used to be anything from 10 to 20 adult members in the household and everyone was assigned certain duties. As far as children were concerned, doing small jobs, following orders from elders, studying regularly and sleeping early was expected from them. One of the interesting points in our daily life used to be to listen to stories told by the old generation members like the grandfather and grandmother, before we went to sleep.
