Geeta Dutt – Solos and Duets (05)

Among the first few songs, I had selected for posting in this series, is this group song, with folksy tune. The film is ‘Chaalbaaz’ (1958), the music is composed by Chitragupt and lyricist is Prem Dhawan. The title of the film evokes memories of late Sridevi and her double role and the comic act in the film of same title in the year 1989.

“Mastaani”(1955) was produced and directed by Dhirubhai Desai for Sharad Productions, Bombay. This “veshbhoosha pradhan” movie had Nigar, Manhar, Shahu Modak, Ratnmala, Niranjan Sharma, Agha, Suryakant, Seeta Bose, Santosh Kumar, N Bhushan, Dilip, Roop Kumar, Mishrilal, B N Bali etc in it. This movie also had guest appearances by Kamal, Indira Bansal, Jankidas, Yashoshara and Bhagan.

This time it is the turn of Music director who is known as the creator of iconic songs, popularly known as Ravi. His association with Rafi sahab begins in 1956-57 with the first film “Ek Saal” with 2 solo songs written by Prem Dhawan. Many of these iconic songs composed by Ravi were sung by Rafi sahab in this long association which ended only with the demise of Rafi Sahab in 1980. I counted 251 songs composed by Ravi in the excel sheet of Rafi sahab songs. Around 200 of these songs are upto late 60’s. In the 70’s Rafi sahab’s output has as it is decreased so it is not surprising that the 70’s decade there are less than 50 songs by the team of Mohammed Rafi-Ravi, with various lyricists.

“Ek Hi Raasta” (1956) was a movie that was produced and directed by B.R.Chopra with story-screenplay- dialogue written by Pt. Mukhram Sharma. Its songs were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and composed by Hemant Kumar who had Ravi as assistant and Yash Chopra was assistant to B R Chopra.

Just to list a few of the famous Rafi solos and duets for Johny Walker.
This series is about collaborations and team work by Rafi Sahab for various artists, mainly with composers, singers and lyricists. But since the song I stumbled upon is too good, atypical rendition by Rafi Sahab for Johnny Walker, as we know the veteran comic actor. So I have included this in the series.

I have stumbled upon some very melodious and wonderful songs in recent weeks and months. I am saving all the links for various series in various folders, but don’t seem to get around to writing the posts. But my speed has reduced since I started using my new HP laptop, which is a gaming one. I had to go for this as I wanted 1 TB data with SSD, whatever that means. I am told that SSD is for higher speed. This was the only model available, without touch screen. So the games and other binge watching tendencies are hampering my blog output.

It is Sahir Ludhianvi’s 100th birth anniversary on 08/03/2021 and I have the good fortune of writing for the last remaining song/snippet from ‘Pyasa’ 1957 to post on this occassion. There is no better showcase then the musical canvas of this classic film, I could not ask for a better opportunity. Thank you Avinash ji for giving me this gift.
