I realized this only when I read Sudhirji’s write-up about him a few hours ago.
Somehow, I felt like paying him a tribute myself on this occasion – so here is my humble tribute to him.

Since even before the films started to talk and sing, music has been an important part of the cinematic experience. Even in the days of silent films, there used to be a live orchestra sitting close to the screen, who would provide music accompaniment and some sound effects to make the proceedings more interesting and to keep engaged the attention of the viewers. Of course, when the sound came, and the music and song became such an inseparable part of the theme, the presentation and the making of the films that with it came a new distinction and a new significance that got attached to the role and position of a music director. But the story of the music and song in the films does not end there.

Internet became available to public in 1995, and it became available to Indian public in 1996. I became exposed to it in 1997 and I began to have internet connection at home from 1998 onwards.
Development of internet took place rapidly and internet forums came into existence soon. I was a cricket enthusiast and I was looking forward to join a cricket forum. I could not find an Indian cricket forum of my liking. There were cricket forums populated by loud, jingoist and abusive ignorants but those sites were not my cup of tea. I finally settled for a Pakistani cricket forum called pakcricbuzz (by now defunct). This was quite a sensible cricket forum and it had some Indians too in it. One Indian called Saurabh was one of its moderators. This happened in the second half of 2004.

The blog completed six years yesterday (19 july 2014). It was planned to touch the much anticipated 10,000th song mark on that day, but that could not be achieved due to unavoidable circumstances. Today the circumstances are favourable. And fortunately it happens to be a sunday as well. Today we are definitely going to touch the 10,000th song mark. What is more, this will be achieved when it is still 19 july 2014 in some parts of the world ! So the roundness of the world, which dictates that different nations have their own times comes to our rescue. 🙂

Introducing Shekhar Gupta – one of the quieter albeit active voices on the blog. Over the past two years, I have been in email communication with him, on various topics related to film music and the blog. He comes across as an unpretentious and humble personality, that belies his stature and accomplishments. 10,000 songs! I’m very glad, that Atul asked me to supply a post for the countdown.
